OP Report: Here Come the Coho - July 24, 2024

July 24, 2024

As we head into July here at the Outpost, we've been experiencing some excellent fishing. The end of June brought particularly hot fishing, with guests remarking that it was some of the best Chinook fishing they had ever seen. Fish in the early to mid-twenties were hitting the boats regularly, with numerous double headers reported in quick succession.

Despite the weather being quintessential of northern BC—overcast days, heavy wet air, and regular rain—fishing has remained steady. We’ve seen a slight slowdown in Chinook fishing as the first week of July has passed, there's still no shortage of fish being hooked. The Coho salmon have started to make their way down the west side from Langara to the Outpost, offering guests a thrilling experience with these strong, surface-fighting fish.

More fish seem to be showing up inshore and in the bays, which provide alternative fishing spots on those rough water days here on the west side of the island. The majority of the action is still taking place offshore and down deep. Cohos are taking the AP spoons the guides are throwing at them, and we are seeing a size range from 6-8 lbs. We are starting to see a few hit the dock in the 10lbs range as we get closer to mid-season.

There is no lack of marine life to view, with Humpback whales being spotted regularly and Orcas showing up a little more frequently than in past years.

We've also started to see a few more sunny days now that we're into July. Guests have been enjoying some of the other activities the Outpost has to offer, such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. Floating in the back bay at the end of a long fishing day, relaxing, and taking in the view has become a favorite for many guests looking to unwind and reflect on their day.

We'd also like to recognize three more Tyee releases:

  • Lauren Pettigrew with a 30.5 lbs Chinook
  • Eric Wahl with a 35 lbs Chinook
  • Mike Freeman with his 31 lbs Chinook release

It's been an exciting start to July, and we look forward to what's to come. Until then, tight lines and happy fishing!
