Event Recap: 2018 Father's Day Trip - A Memory Making SuccessBy Don WellsIn response to numerous queries from guests over the years, The West Coast Fishing Club added a new themed trip to the special events calendar in 2018, one that would commemorate Fathers’ Day and help us to celebrate The Club’s 30th anniversary season. The inaugural Father’s Day Trip and Tournament, held at The Clubhouse June 17-21, proved once again that there is nothing like a trip to a special place like Langara Island to strengthen bonds between family members. And there is nothing like the prospects of battling a wild chinook salmon to make kids and adults alike to want to ditch the phone and connect with each other instead. The trip featured special guest Les Stroud, host of the popular television series Survivorman and his son Logan, along with some friendly competition for the largest chinook salmon and the unique camaraderie for which all three of The Club’s lodges have long been famous.

Logan & Les Stroud enjoying quality bonding time on the water. As anticipated, many families took part. Glen Fell was one of the fathers honoured in a fun way by his family, which included his wife Laurie, son Tom, daughter Meagan and son-in-law Jason. Stephen Wisnewski and Steven Wisnewski Jr, who have been regular guests for years, were also in the house as was long-time friend of The Club, Bruce Langereis with his son Rees.

The survivorman’s post-dinner talk on the second night revealed the background on the show, which ran for a total of eight seasons, as well as his passion for music and writing. He later took questions from guests, each of whom received a copy of one of his latest book and CD.The following night featured a solo musical performance on the deck by Les, who counts American folk music legends, John Prine and the late Steve Goodman as major song-writing influences. On the final night of the trip he took his one-man show indoors for one more evening of memorable good times for all.

Meanwhile on the water, anglers competed for daily and tournament prizes courtesy of Yeti Coolers and Islander Reels, with Ken Konkin taking first place in the tournament with a 28-pound chinook salmon. Brad Weston caught a 21.5-pound fish, equal to that of Kevin Torpy, but was awarded second place ahead of Kevin by way of a tie-breaking formula that measured total weight of all fish caught.
