OP Report: Welcome Back to The Outpost – June 16, 2023

June 16, 2023 | 3092 Views

Hi Folks, we’re back for another great season at The OP.

After finishing the pre-season preparations, renovations, and provisioning, we started the season off with our annual staff derby in May. There was already a good amount of activity in the water, and the staff sure enjoyed being back in Port Louis after a long winter.

You’ll be happy to know we have a number of familiar faces joining us here for another season – along with a few very welcome additions. Chef Stjepan and Chef Dylan are back in the kitchen trying to outdo themselves from last year and if the early reviews are any indication they are accomplishing it.

The inside team is once again anchored by Miss Vicky in her third season and followed by Miss Shaun on her second season and Miss Holly as the new member showing that she is up for the challenge of another busy sold out season at the OP.

On the dock we have Ian for his third season, he’s teamed up with Nat who took a season off but returning with her knowledge of operations and her infectious sense of humor. The dock, guests, and fish are in great hands.

In the boats and on the water we have all our star players returning, Mike, Scott, Clay, Rob, Colin, and Hanes, along with a new addition – Andrew Hooper. Andrew has fit in like he’s been with the OP for years and showing that he can keep up with the veterans by putting each guest on the fish. Basil W. and guide Butcher with an early June 31 lb released tyee.

We are already starting to see some size in the fish passing by our front door, double-headers are frequent and high teens and mid twenties are being taken regularly with our first Tyee release of the season being a solid 31 lb caught by Basil W and guide Colin (AKA Butcher).Guest Kiran P. enjoying the June fishery and stellar weather.

This season is already shaping to rival last season which was filled with over-the-top, great, non-stop fishing and 32 released Tyees. After 4 trips in the books, we have guests already commenting about rebooking for next year.

I’m looking forward to keeping you in the loop about what goes on here in Port Louis.

Tight lines,

Shawn Crawford
General Manager, The Outpost

      Hi Roman,

Thank you for your question! At this time, according to the DFO, halibut is the only species limited by size. Specifically, one Halibut between 90cm and 133cm or two under 90cm. With that said, WCFC prioritizes fisheries conservation and therefore encourages the release of trophy size chinook salmon (30lbs+).

Looking forward to your reports. The wife an I have been to all of West coast resorts.hippa 3 times before they closed down. The fishing on the west side of Graham island is the best adventure any fisherman could ask for. Will look into booking for 2024 thanks.
