CH Report: Deep Water Chinooks - August 12, 2024

August 12, 2024

The fog bank has lifted, the sun's shining, and the water's teeming with all species of salmon. It's been a fantastic couple of weeks fishing here at Langara.

Check out today's weather above—that's off Cohoe Point! Calm waters and plenty of chinooks, ranging from 14 to 23 lbs. The biggest one to hit the dock was a 28-pounder on Tucker's boat. Every pass, we were hooking chinook—some smaller in the lower teens, lots in the mid to high teens. Bites every few minutes. As far as you could see, fish were jumping. The place is paved with life. Lucy, in the next pic, was busy helping with guide chores and coaching.

Over the past few weeks, we've had a tremendous run off the west side, out in the deep, along the 50-fathom line, from the Shark Fin south to the Peanut. We're loving the combination of Scotty downriggers and plugs, as well as bait. Most of these fish are deep—150 to 200 feet or more. The rigger sure helps get us down quick and enables us to fish the Tomic plugs: 602 and the infamous 500.

The Bowl has been just okay, but there's some action there too. The east side is good, but we're contending with an abundance of salmon sharks, which is keeping us honest. All of us are encountering sharks... careful, boys! High-speed donuts and outrageous avoidance techniques are on full display.

I hooked a shark halibut, lol, that tore down the wall in the pic below. Korey's guest had just had a twenty-pounder half chowed down, and I was sure this monster was now on my hook. We took turns reefing on the rod, and this popped up—pic below!

Good times, lol... salmon rod 200 lber.

The coho fishing remains solid, and some of these fish are in the teens now. All depths, but fishing bait at 40 to 80 feet is a good bet. Below, we have a few pics of some teen coho grabbed off the east side.

Fishing was heavy in the fog last week, and my guests took over the netting. Here's Stacy hard at it, doing his thing.

DJ wanted to help me display a typical west side story. These were grabbed by my guests deep—225 feet to be exact! Bait was the ticket for me, and this was recent, Aug 9th.

Finally, our crew of guides wanted a shoutout, so here you go. These are just a few of our team at the end of a busy day out west. Look at the smiles—all are catching and loving it. These are good times now out here at Langara and the Clubhouse. The guests are busy, the guides are busy, the dock staff are very busy, and of course, Lucy and Parker are busy doing what we love!

See you all soon. Off to the wrapper; sunrise comes early!

Goodnight from the Clubhouse,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, and of course, Lucy!
