CH Report: August Ends with Strong Chinook Runs - August 30, 2024

September 2, 2024

Here we go, the fishing updates here at Langara and the CLUBHOUSE.

August continues to produce great fishing, although the coho have vacated the area in the last ten days. We are targeting chinook for the most part out on the EAST SIDE, specifically in the Cohoe Point area. We’ve been fishing 60 to 90 feet on the riggers for the most part and are having some good action with chinook in the 13 to 22 lb range. The larger chinook seem to be in the upper twenties. Most of us are not hitting any coho, but we are finding chums in some numbers.

Going back a few trips, we were releasing some nice tyee and angling some great chinook out at the BOWL.

Chris Behmer and his group of six anglers managed to release 4 tyee! It was all happening out at the BOWL, with Dan fishing with Lucy and myself releasing this 34 lber. This fish hit the mooching rod off the stern of the boat, 15 pulls.

We revived the tyee in the fish tote filled with seawater and quickly released it over the side and on its way to wherever this tyee was heading.

Not a moment later, Korey had to blow us away with this monster 45 lber taken along the wall in amongst a pile of boats tacking all ways—lol, what a cluster. We all gave him space, and MIKE, his guest, managed to land and release this beauty.

Brent’s guests had some success too, as they always do. On day three of the trip, Brent grabbed a great 39 lber with his guest. What a trip for them!

John, on day four of the trip, managed a tyee, deep in the Bowl, 40 feet off the rigger, right on the tide change. Here’s a nice pic taken by Paul of the action.

DJ made a rare appearance at the Bowl, and he was grabbing fish too. Paul took the pic below of DJ's extra-wide, monster 27-foot platform, as he refers to it.

Things have slowed somewhat from the Bowl tyee bonanza. That said, it’s still fun with some bites for sure. The Garske family returned, and the girls all caught some fish, with McKenna starting the trip on fire, landing a 100 lb halibut in the Bowl, and several nice chinook out at Cohoe Point. A few pics below of the action.

Lauren and her fish, with Lucy coaching in the pic below.

Lindsay had Lucy coaching her on several fish. Lucy was on point most of the trip.

So here we are, the end of AUGUST, still finding nice chinook as per usual. Realistically, the chinook are in the 12 to 23 lb range, with the big boys in the upper twenties. That said, we have a run most SEPTEMBERS that passes by the east side of Langara, angled deep with the downriggers. It’s not uncommon to see tyees released. So stay tuned for an update in the near future.

On behalf of the guides, thanks for fishing with us, and thanks to the guides who have forwarded pictures to me of some great fish we released. At the end of the day, fishing here at Langara is about the experience—the dramatic scenery, the weather, the wildlife, the remoteness, and of course, The Clubhouse perched on the southern cliff of Langara ISLAND. And, of course... LUCY! There’s no dog like her.

Goodnight from Langara,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Clubhouse.
