CH Report: Langara Island is a Fishing Guides Dream - July 21, 2022

July 21, 2022

A dry cloudy day in here today, a southwest swell out west and a calm debris free day up the east side of Langara today. The fleet spread out fishing most points in the local area and all boats returned with fish.Con H. had top fish of the trip, released with a weight measuring in at 32lbs. this Fish was grabbed in the fish bowl area.

Overall the trip saw what I would call average Chinook fishing, most Chinook 15 to 23lb range. A large portion of these fish were taken out west in the BOWL. We had a heck of a time with the random kelp and rock weed. An angler had to be on the job to work four lines and keep your baits clean and rolling. When the bite was on you were busy, when the bite was off you were busier lol. Those that battled hard had some decent Chinook fishing. The odd very nice halibut was trolled as well.

The Coho fish was very good with those targeting these fish doing well up the east side. The Coho are definitely in larger numbers this season and the average Coho is creeping up in size, with lots of 9lbers now and a rumor of a 14lber hitting the dock. We fish the Coho offshore anywhere up the east side in 200 feet of water.

Halibut fishing is continuing strong on the west side. Weather and stomachs providing, and most boats return with great halibut, lots between 25 and 40lbs.

The last trip or two were very good on the Chinook and halibut fronts. Below is a nice photo of Ryan S. and his released Tyee, a 32lb specimen.

This fish was angled in the Bowl and was a total surprise. We had patiently gone up and down that wall what seemed like a hundred times without so much as a bite. Not to mention the downpour and cold temps. It did not help I had dressed lightly... never again trust those weather reports. In the end, we had a great fish and our trip was off to a great start.

We hit the halibut pretty hard on day three of the trip, of course we waited for pristine calm conditions and out west was our target. We spent a couple hours at it and were rewarded with three retained halibut averaging 40lbs. Below is a pic of Jack and his crew with some great halibut for the family waiting at home.

It’s nice when a halibut plan comes together. That capped off a great week for us here for sure.

We do get sun up here and calm seas as evidenced in the photo above. Below is Brian Legge out with Jayce in beautiful BOULDER BAY. There were Chinook in there tight to the kelp and we were catching.

A great morning to be heading out targeting large Chinook!

And above is BRIAN with a take home low twenties Chinook, very proud of his catch, and largest Chinook of his life, well played.

Philip P. and his group had some great Chinook fishing during their stay, below is a pic of the results of one of our sessions out west.

We hit them pretty good and had a bunch of humor to round out some great days.

And of course LUCY was invited to fish with RON C. and his gang, we had a blast and LUCY kept us entertained.

Below is a picture of Ron C. and his group with a nice take home Chinook.

Ok, bed time. Have to put a couple dogs to bed, do my rounds and get ready for our next trip, which starts on Thursday. I am looking forward to getting out there and targeting large Chinook salmon in one of the most desirable areas to fish on the planet. Dixon Entrance, or more precisely Langara Island is Disneyland to a guide like myself. Kelp beds, shorelines, points and bays loaded with feed all holding Chinook salmon, what any good guide should be dreaming of at the moment.

Good night and thanks for checking in,

Mike Tonnesen
