CH Report: Starting off Strong - June 9, 2023

June 9, 2023

Here we go, we are off and running up at Langara, for the 2023 season. We opened June 1 and there is plenty of good things happening up here at The Clubhouse.

For starters the fishing is better than expected, with a large volume of 12 to 18lbs chinook feeding in all quadrants of the island. There are oodles of teen size fish up the east side of Langara. There are a few surprises as well, below is a photo of guide ALEX, in the process of releasing a 32lbs chinook his guest Mike Walsh. This Tyee was taken off Gunia, a very nice start to the season.

Brent went out west exploring and grabbed a high twenties off Lacy, another great start for Brents group.

Evan dragged some killer spoons around with his guest Terry M, and the result was a vey nice 26 lber, photo below.

My boat 6 worked the Bowl several days in a row, finally subduing a mid twenties with guest Myles, this fish angled on cutplug, 40 feet off the rigger.

Look how silver these chinooks are, prime condition in June for sure. Nothing quite as exciting as a rod buckled over in tight off the kelp out at the fish bowl.

Todays highlight for my boat was first off, no wind, sun, and calm seas. Secondly, although a bit slower today, we worked the bowl several times and late this afternoon Mark K., along with LUCY, caught and released a 31lb chinook. We had been out at LACY working that, with minimal success, and decided to scoot over to the BOWL, a 5 minute run. Great idea, two passes we hit 5 chinook, topped by this beauty, pictured in the revival tub before release.

Mark grabbed this fish right on the hot corner in the Bowl, and we were pleased with our timing lol.

Look at Lucy coaching as usual, and of course wearing her life jacket. This is a requirement for all of us while on the water. Also note the blue skies and the flat water out west.

So this concludes a first look at the whats up fishing wise here at Langara. Most of your familiar guides have returned, including Brent, BUD, Paul, DJ, Tucker, Dan, Evan, Austin, Teagan, Pete for the full pull, Alex, Dave, Liam, just to name a few of the 21 guides here ready to make your trip the best trip of the season.Down at the dock, self guided boats are being well looked after for sure, with Derek Barnicke heading up the program with a very competent crew, things have never ran as smooth in my opinion. Chantal is there running the candy boat with Thomas, and they are there to assist in anything you need out on the water, from gear, to bait, to where the sam heck are the fish. Both are familiar with the game here and are positioned to ensure the self guide program is a success.

Ok, have to run, dogs to feed, times to get, tomorrow comes early. We so look forward to seeing our returning guests and all our new excited first timers.

Check back soon for our next report,

Mike Tonnesen,

Head Guide, Clubhouse
