CH Report: Great Coho & Decent Chinook Action – Sept 6, 2018

September 6, 2018 | 414 Views

A beautiful afternoon in here at Langara, the weather smartened up and we are now up in the lounge listening to the band and swapping tales.

Sept has been good, some fantastic coho action and some decent chinook moving through our waters. Not many places on this coast you are still catching tyee class chinook as we move into the second week of September.

The Leven group fished with me, Aug 30 to September 2nd and we had some good fishing and an even better time fishing the east side of Langara. The chinooks were there and we picked away at them for three days. Below is a pic of Johan Leven and a very nice low twenties chinook we trolled up off the Fallen Tree. We had to work for this one, as a large sea lion charged the fish. Lot’s of games played to put it in PG terms but we grabbed our fish, winning!

Fergal O’Driscoll had a very nice fish as well. We grabbed this very nice mid-twenties chinook off the pin at Cohoe, 65 feet on the rigger. What a nice fish to start off our trip, well done Fergal.

Here is our group with the 25 lb’er, well done boys!

Philip Spanton grabbed the top coho in our boat, this beauty went 15 lbs. Here is the pic of a very happy Philip.

The coho are big now. They come and go, but I am seeing some in the teens every day within our fleet. Yesterday we grabbed a 17 lb’er, Simon’s boat had an 18!

Last night on our last pass in a downpour of rain, Alex Moore had a great bite tight on the beech, and set the hooks on this very nice 25 lb’er to save our afternoon shift. Here is a pic of Alex or as he is called, Sandy with his prize.

This am it was DEAD. No springs, no coho, this is an honest report as you know. We tried everywhere but notta, not a bite. Most of us were blanked. What the sam heck? In for lunch, guide naps, hide under the blankets for an hour.

The pm shift was better. I headed out to Cohoe Point, and no way, I was the only boat there. The tide was ripping, a large kelp line formed off the fallen tree. On the plus side, the wind died, now sunny and warm. I set up on my standard troll, fishing shallow, heading south in tight to shore.

Not long into the troll, John Barci’s rod buckled and a very nice chinook shot by my bow as if to be running upstream. 10 minutes later we had a 31 lb tyee in the net, and a very happy John.

Pictured below is a pic of John’s fish, the only tyee of the trip.

31 lb tyee for John Barci.

Lucy wanted a picture on the boat so here is Lucy enjoying the sun.

Fishing continues on here at Langara. The pressure has lightened up, a few less boats now and a more casual pace for sure. The fish are here and there, come and go. That’s fishing. The east side seems to be the most consistent and fish are shallow and deep. I am having more success shallow. The halibut are everywhere, probably the best halibut showing I have seen here. For the last month it has be insane, can’t miss on the west side, weather permitting. The east side is producing overs as well for those bouncing bottom, lots of releasers, 50 lbs plus.

That is going to do it for tonight. I will have another report up next week. Thanks again for checking in and a big thanks to all of you that fish with us and follow the reports, back again soon! Good night from The Clubhouse.
