North Island Lodge Report: June 28, 2009

June 28, 2009

It’s looking like I may just have to go for a fish tomorrow. Reports of 40+lb Chinook around Langara Island have the dock buzzing. The guides think the hogs are right on schedule and this old guide needs to get a taste of the action. I’m hoping Chef Walter will spot for me and maybe even take care of the generator oil change …. Ok, maybe that’s pushing it.

Last trip a total of 5 Tyee were caught with Wes Dawson’s 38 and Adam Letek’s 46 leading the charge. After years of chasing fish up and down this coast, this was Adam’s largest Chinook to date… Langara delivers again.

The latest entry into The Spring Salmon Challenge is:

Date                             June 26, 2009

Lodge                          Clubhouse

Angler                          Noah Jones

Location                       Boulder Bay

Measurements              44in length 27in girth

Calculated Weight        40.1 lbs

Guide                           Korey Fletcher

The weather has turned in the last 2 days with southwesterly gails hitting us. Guests are looking a little soggy arriving back at the lodge for a bowl of Walter’s chowder. The term “earning them” has been mumbled several times in the last 48 hours, but the sideways rain and wind has not stopped the Tyee’s from rolling in. I just looked down at the dock and noticed a few wind burnt faces, high fives, soaked floater suits hovering over silver slabs of salmon...A solid reminder were are in the Queen Charlottes.

The coho are thick at the Cabbage Patch right now, guide Tyson and guests managed to connect while fly fishing a chartreuse clouser in a 35knt wind….not an easy task. Tomorrows forecast looks promising as we look forward to a break in the weather.

Rumors of the first Langara Island 50+ Chinook hit us this morning. This is a possible entry into The Spring Salmon Challenge.  I’ll keep you posted down the stretch as things heat up.
