Panama: a taste of the town

Panama update: A taste of the town entails a short profile of three restaurants that make up the culinary experience here in Panama city. In deciding upon an menu and culinary vision for the Pacific Provider we want to highlight and incorporate whats fresh, local, culturally significant, suited for the climate and most of all total delicious when onboard “the ship”.

So we’ll start tonight with one of David Henesy’s restaurants, La Posta. A stylish and elegant restaurant in a renovated “colonial home” that has a formal but fun atmosphere…

We ordered a variety of dishes off the menu to sample what the top restauranteur has to offer. Starting with a thick, juicy pork chop…

some beautiful fish…

and a lovely langostino (fresh jumbo prawn!) salad…

All the dishes were exquisite, perfectly prepared with strong visuals and good service. It was our best meal to date in town and a must try for a special date or when you want to dress and have a special night out, thank you David.

Next up we asked around to see where the locals would take their families for a breakfast or lunch. One of the options was El Trapiche…

A very casual place with friendly homestyle service and home cooked Panamanian cuisine, here are some examples…

fresh cane juice, incredibly tasty and served in plastic cups, with plastic seats and plastic flatware. First up was my fried dough sandwich…

talk about comfort food! Next up a traditional combination plate of rice, soup, meat and a little more fried dough…

throw in a little fried fish…

and you’ve got yourself a very relaxed fun local meal. The results spoke for themselves…

Tonight we took it down another notch searching out a local “carbon” (charcoal, bbq) favorite, La Tablita…

Equivalent in feel to a north american diner this place has been around for a long time (as per the sign), was outside, very casual, cheap and I didn’t even know we’d ordered when the food started to arrive. The waiters were our best friends and the food was cooked over a charcoal grill, a little overdone but what do you expect for 5 bucks. The drinks consisted of a bottle of fresh lemonade, a small bottle of local rum and a bucket of ice, the rest was up to us…

Michael had the beef…

I had the fried fish and Tobey had the chicken, cooked over the open coals…

It was all tasty, quick, fast and fun. 
It wasn’t all “work” today as Nigel took us along the canal this aftertnoon and into the jungle for a little hike. We saw monkeys and birds while enjoying the noises and shades of green. We also visited a jungle lodge with spectaular views out into the wild abyss…

Incredibly the untouched jungle begins 20 minutes outside the city, there’s just too much to explore here. I can’t imagine how remote and beautiful the Las Perlas Islands are going to be.
