CH Report: 62 LB TYEE - Need We Say More? - August 25, 2021

August 25, 2021

Hello again on a misty morning here on Langara Island. A steady drizzle greets us as we are about to head out for the day of angling along the Graham Island shoreline in search of chinook salmon and whatever else shows up on the flood tide.

This last week has been very good on the chinook front highlighted by a very large specimen, measuring at a whopping 62 lbs! Tyler Hildebrand was the fortunate angler, guided by Austin. I witnessed the catch and took the pics best I could out at the fish bowel. They grabbed this fish in the prime spot basically second pass through, good for them. The fish was properly revived in a holding tank of water and swiftly swam off, very cool to see that for sure.

Guest Tyler Hildebrand with the season topping chinook of 62lbs! Here is a shot of guide Austin releasing this beautiful tyee.

This set me in full panic mode, scrambling to bait up and get one of these giants myself. I looked over my shoulder and Dan and his guests were buckled over with the next tyee,  a very nice 34 lber for John Mooney. This fish was quickly measured and released. Not ten minutes later, my stern rod screamed off on the outside of the banjo reef, this fish matching up against Toby Mallinder, which he angled patiently, and after a good battle we had a 31 lber to hold in our revival tub, a silver bright chinook measuring 31 lbs! Toby released this fish as well, great job! The tyee bite was called and the area soon flooded with our fleet lol...a lot of fun searching for these tyee was in order and we did have some success.

Guide Screamer and Toby Mallinder with the perfect 31 lb catch-and-release!

Peter Cybart chipped in with a 34 which he caught and released with the help of guide Paul.

On the coho front, there are very few coho around at this time. Still 6 to 9 lbs, where are they? That said, most effort is on the chinook fishery. There has been decent to very good halibut action on the outside of Langara weather permitting.

I'm including a few pictures of Toby and his brother Rob, a few take home chinook and some good action  over the last few days. The afternoon ebb has been the better bite out  west, and the boats that are patient and wait for a school to show up have done very well. Sometimes though....you wait a couple hours for the chinook to show! Patience! The Boulder area has been decent but very busy with boats on the shallow tack, and the odd lion has kept me out West.  Tucker had a good tide at Gunia, and reported a hot tide with 5 in the twenties. The highway has been over all slow, with bait showing but not any volume of fish.

Double header action for guests Toby and Rob. Very nice 26 and 25lb chinook.

A 26 lb take-home chinook for Toby!

A gorgeous day and a couple of mid-twenties for guests Louis and Toby. All around a phenomenal trip. So a quick report here, but the bottom line is the chinook continue to be here in some numbers and what can you say about a 62 lber, that's over the top! We are having a hot August fishery for the target species, so big smiles around the dock for sure. For those coming up, expect some nice chinook fishing and plenty fish to take home. Let's see if the coho show up lol.

See you all soon, off to the West Bank now, I'll be on channel nine if you want a report!

Mike Tonnesen,

Head Guide, Screamer
