Outpost Caretakers - It's The Holiday Season!

January 1, 2013

For some reason this holiday season has seemed quieter than normal.

“How much quieter could it get”, you ask yourself, “as you already live in the middle of nowhere.” I've asked myself this same question.

The snowfall we had several weeks ago set the perfect winter scene and gave me the nudge I needed to unpack all the boxes labelled xmas stuff.

It's amazing how much I've accumulated in the last couple of years.

You know you've slept in when the first thing you see in the morning is Sammy looking in your bedroom window.

Such a beautiful calm night I couldn't resist lighting this tree.

Unlike last year there will be no pictures of iced shortbread cookies, rich chocolate fudge, steamed Christmas pudding or orange and rum cake. We have been determined to shed a few pounds this year and in keeping to this the kitchen has been devoid of holiday baking. Maybe this is why I feel the atmosphere is different.

Trying to shake off thoughts of ' bah humbug' I went in search of the perfect tree. Being plopped down among hundreds of acres of forest does not guarantee that this is an easy feat. I learned this the hard way our first year here when I headed out the day before Christmas armed with my saw and not a doubt in my mind that I would return with anything but a majestic specimen to hang my homemade decorations on. Well we all remember my “charlie brown” tree that year so when I began my search four days before Christmas, my only objective was for something that had at least one good side and size doesn't matter.

A few sparkly balls, a string of twinkling lights, some tinsel draped among the branches and suddenly it looks like a Christmas tree.

It's Christmas Eve......

....and time to open a present.

December 25th and Al wasn't taking any chances on missing out on some specials treats so camped out at the back door.

Cool and windy outside, which is just fine for a walk along the beach while the turkey is roasting, the rolls are raising and a bottle of wine is chilling.

It's almost time to pop the champagne....Happy New Year and all the best for 2013!

Till next time,

Heather & Mike
