The Clubhouse: 2014 Year In Review

September 20, 2014

“If you are looking for Chinook Salmon, legitimate chances at large tyees and ten minute boat rides to protected water. Langara Island is your destination.” ~ Mike Tonnesen, "Screamer" Clubhouse Head Guide

June:

The opening week at The Clubhouse kept everyone busy with lots of Chinooks around in the mid to high teens, 9 tyees recorded and the early arrival of Coho in the 5 to 6 pound range. The highlight of the opening frame was a 54 pound Chinook angled by Doug Shigaki that won him first place to take down the Short Notice Club Salmon Derby and earn the top prize of a return SNC trip later in the season. Lots of fish, big fish and the early arrival of Coho – couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season.

As June progressed the average size and volume of Chinooks continued to grow, with no distinct hotspot evident, as every point and kelp bed were producing with lots of double headers. At the start of the second week of June, just as expected, the first large wave of tyees rolled in. Over 25 tyees were recorded by The Clubhouse guests over next two weeks alone….not to mention the ones that got away, but we won’t dwell on that.

The amazing fishing that we have now become accustomed to in June carried right through to the end of the month and it was another memorable early season fishery on Langara. There was barely a moment to rest out on the water that kept our guests on the edge of their seats ready for another double-header or that chance at their trophy tyee.

Here are a few of the memorable moments from June:

* Another 33lb tyee for John Nadeau caught at good old Cohoe Point on a beautiful calm June day.

After a phenomenal June, July started off with some rough weather and a few visits from a couple pods of orca whales that provided great entertainment for our guests that were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these majestic mammals. However, this never stops our guides from putting our guests on the fish and figuring out where the tyees are hiding along the way.

As July progressed the average size of the Chinooks continued to grow into the mid twenties and by the end of July the average Coho were in the 10 to 11 pound range, which is very large for this time of year and always fun to catch.

When our guests were looking for a change of pace and that perfect take home size Halibut there were lots of those around in July and everyone that put in the time reaped the reward.

Here are a few memorable moments from July:

August kicked off with a bang with great weather, good volume in the mid twenties, and lots of tyees from all locations on the Island. There were also lots of Sockeyes around that were even being caught on bait, which is uncommon as they don’t normally feed on herring. The second week of August saw the continued arrival of above average sized Cohos with the biggest being a 17.5 pounder that put up one hell of a fight.

Heading into the last week of August and the annual Fishing for Kids tournament, the fishing was hot and the guides were ready for the fierce competition that lay ahead. In the end Bruce Langereis took down top prize with his 42.4 lb Chinook and it was a very exciting tournament in support of a great cause.

The early August success that we experienced continued right through to the end of the month and spoiled all of our guests with beautiful days, calm water, and the best fishing in the world.

Beyond the consistent Chinook action, it was the Coho fishing that was unlike anything Screamer had ever seen before that was the highlight.Screamer summed September fishing up best, “Here at Langara we do not shut the doors, the fish keep pouring by and it’s a long season. There are plenty of Chinooks to mid September. This is where you want to fish for spring Salmon, this is why we built the lodge here on Langara. Close to the grounds, with ample Chinooks, five months of the year. That is why I am here. I never get tired of the buckled Sage rod and screaming Islander reel. Maybe it is a sickness.” ~ Mike Tonnensen, Clubhouse Head Guide, ScreamerHere are a few memorable moments from September:
