The Outpost is live!

June 3, 2011

Outpost Update: Live from Port Louis its almost salmon season...actually it is salmon season! That magical time of year, its still chilly, its been 9 months since your last Chinook and the water looks fishy.

My startup crew met at the south terminal for our early morning trip up north...

Its all smiles of anticipation for what lies ahead. In Masset Brian Hillier had a couple of boats ready for us to drive the 80 miles around the top of Haida Gwaii and into Port Louis...

Brian used to guide for WCFC in fact he guided me and my father back in the early 90's at NIL where he was known as "the Inmate" if I remember correctly. He's done a great job getting the boats ready and up to snuff for the season. We exchange a few thoughts before heading out...

hmmm, this isn't going to be as smooth as I thought. After a few bumps and a little fog we stopped in for a short visit at NIL and the Clubhouse before heading south. The waves and wind were with us and we made good time and swung around Tian...

There's still snow in the hills but we were happy to get our first glimpse of Brock Island.

The sun lit our last mile to the Outpost...our home for the next 3 months. After dumping our gear it was right to work, below Chef Jordan was keen to familiarize himself in his new kitchen...

It was also time to say goodbye to our winter caretakers Heather and Mike after their 287 days at the OP...

They did a fantastic job and the OP looks great! From left to right; Justine, Linden, Jordan, Rebecca, Mike, Heather, Me and Kaili. The evening sky decided to paint M&H a goodbye scene...

which intensified as the evening progressed...

red sky at night...

lets hope its good sailing for our barge, which is supposed to arrive tomorrow am.

...but there is more to this spring startup story...speaking of springs...we did get out to test the waters and some of our new staff...

None of them really knew what to expect so Kaili and I made them do pretty much everything...other than bait the hooks. They were focused pupils. Then...

It was fish on... starting with Rebecca who in fine form asked for her first fish to be released...

...as you wish. The fish got bigger...

and bigger...unfortunately this one was a bleeder that had to come in the boat...

not bad for a beginner, it was a lovely white spring and fought like a champ. We still have a few openings this summer if you've been thinking of a trip...early season indicators are looking good!

Dinner after a long day...I want you to imagine yourself here...

Outpost blogs begin again.

See you tomorrow,

Ken Beatty (with Kaili consulting on this one)
