The Outpost Report: March 29, 2010

OUTPOST UPDATE: SHORT & SWEET, this week I’m happy to announce the return of guide Mike Panz and dockhand Milan Wejr to the 2010 outpost team. This will be Mike Panz’s second year at the OP…

Mike was a huge addition to the team last year, his passion for fishing, friendly demeanor and years of experience on the coast made him a guest favorite. Mike is currently pursuing an engineering degree and is REALLY looking forward to another summer on the water and away from the books. Mike, we’re happy to have you back, although I’m not sure the fish would say the same thing…

Super Star dockhand Milan Wejr surprised us all by announcing that he’ll leave a successful career in the movie and TV biz to return to the Outpost for his 3rd season. Here he is with his trademark radio in the back pocket and halibut on a rope.

Milan is hoping to bring some of his film experience to the lodge this summer by capturing on video some of the adventures, mishaps and events that occur around the lodge…I’m not sure if we’ll post these clips or offer weekly DVDs of the live action but either way it will be a new page in the Outpost story. Milan is especially happy to have a new ice machine and fish packing area that will ensure all your fish is packed, chilled and ready for processing. Great to have you back Milan and see you when its time to unload the barge (pound for pound the best unloader in the business)…

Lastly Caretaker Pete, freshly back from vacation writes:

“Things are pretty much back to normal around here, I might even go out for a day of harvesting roe on kelp. The commercial fishermen in the area tried to hire me. I said perhaps I could volunteer my services for an afternoon. Slinging egg laden kelp all day isn’t my idea of the best time, but I’m curious how their operation works. So far they have erected three ponds and caught 200 tons of herring. They divided the herring into the three ponds and then cut and strung lines of seaweed across them. Essentially they’ve built the herring a love shack. Once the business is done, they haul up the seaweed and brine it in their holds. They have all of this set up just off Coates creek in Port Louis proper. Their boat is a 60 foot seine netter with 5 crew – only one is under the age of 60.”

Fascinating Pete thanks for the update. Roe on Kelp is a delicacy and served in seafood/sushi restaurants in Vancouver. I find the herring surprisingly crunchy and a touch on the fishy side if not prepared properly. If you ever wondered where it came from now you know.

Enjoy…

That’s all for this week,

Ken
