The Outpost Report: June 7, 2010

June 7, 2010 | 1065 Views

OUTPOST UPDATE: It’s always fun to meet new friends, I’ve got one who comes to visit at least 3-4 times a day…

He or she is an excellent bug catcher even though he/she is clearly some kind of woodpecker. Can anyone help identify this one? It flies from tree to tree, pecking occasionally, then hovering and snatching bugs out of the air. I really appreciate the visits and here’s a closer look…

I’ve also heard today that one of our blog followers (who is fighting prostate cancer) has had some very positive results recently. In another life he would have been a great “Caretaker Pete” and so today I’ll give you a little behind the scene’s look at how this place runs and what we and the caretaker have to look after. Lets start with power; we are remote and have to generate our own power, we have 3 generators on site, the largest of which is a 50 KW…

She needs a bit of a clean but it runs mostly during the day when demands are highest. At night we switch to a smaller 35 KW generator as power usage is less. Here she is…

During the winter the caretaker or caretakers really don’t need much power so run a 20KW generator and usually turn the power off at night and sometimes during the day to conserve fuel (we can only hold so much on site). Here is the 20 KW…

Neither myself, my dock staff or the caretakers know much about these machines. However, when things goes wrong you need to figure it out and be creative. So Mom, you can’t say I never use my fine arts background, I’m coming up with creative solutions daily.

These machines all run on Diesel and we have 4 enormous tanks that hold 22800 Liters and need to be filled 3 times a year. We usually just make it to each fuel delivery. How do we fuel up? Check out the previous blogs for photos of the barge…it’s quite a procedure. Here are the tanks…

For water we have an RO machine: It’s a Reverse Osmosis system that takes saltwater from the ocean and turns it into fresh water that is perfectly safe and tasty to drink…

Its typically a finicky machine so we have a back up creek system and lots of  bottled water just in case. So far the RO is running like a champ! Lets hope it continues to do so.

We’ve also installed a new burner on the boiler that’s heating the water and the lodge…

This had previously broken down for Caretaker Pete who had to go a month with cold showers before a new part was brought in.  All systems are now up and working beautifully.

Around the lodge today Ronne and Bryan finished the new deck and are working on setting up a roof, it looks superb…

Baboo, Whitney, Mark and Rick were working on the docks, ramps and carpets…

and the inside of the house looks fab, full of home made jams…

and freezers stocked with food for the summer…

The only significant casualty thus far is poor old Mr. Sock. We’ve got a pork chop down (Dock hand Brent) whom we hope gets well soon.

So may the healing powers of Haida Gwaii touch all of our staff, readers and especially one special follower who is fighting so hard. May the force be with you.

With warmest wishes from the Outpost
