The Outpost Report: July 27, 2010

July 27, 2010

OUTPOST UPDATE: Lets begin with a 1999 Pol Roger Champagne…

Where else do I start with so much going on? First Dino Renaerts of Fraiche restaurant in Vancouver led a group of guests this morning through the preparation of lunch for all in house…

Halibut was the main and Kate Ann introduced the menu to a hungry crowd after a morning of fishing…

Both the class and the end product were enjoyed by all. Don was questioned on his attire for the class; an apron and Ugg boots? In house fashion guru Kaili Clay thought it a unique combination…

You wear aprons like Kilts according to Don…we won’t say anymore, nor show a shot from the "backside".
While on the water Bruce and John were experimenting with new ways to drink beer…creatively they came up with the “Kelp Bong”…

They thought the idea so good they brought it back for everyone to try…

It became a media frenzy with all sorts of photos being held back for ransom. Nobody was left un-assailed by the peer pressure. WCFC office Nycol was given instructions…

And visiting chef Jamie tried to argue his way out of the situation…

To no avail and in the end…”it tastes so good when it touches your lips”
On the dock today there was some success…

Bruce, JP and Steve cleaned up…

John had his hands full.

And Dennis caught his first ever Chinook at 20lbs. Weather and fishing are improving so it looks very good for tomorrow.
Back inside a special dinner was being prepared by Jamie Kennedy (with help from son Jack, Tobey, Michael and Dino).

What a team, nowhere in Canada tonight will you find this combination of talented people in such a wild place! Jamie started off with some canapés sourced from guest catches…

Steve was happy to oblige. The champagne was poured…

Jamie introduced the meal…

And we moved into a five course dinner starting with some lovely scallops…

oving into some short ribs…

The entire dinner was just superb! What a treat, what a day and what a trip.
I’ll end tonight with a nice fish that Nycol and I released in the rare Haida Gwaii sun…

As always,
Capt’n Ken
