The Outpost Report: July 22, 2010

OUTPOST UPDATE: A lot of biological curiosities today on the dock starting with a Bat fish, hauled up from 200+ feet snagged on a halibut hook…

Everything evolves with a purpose, I can’t imagine what role this little critter plays. Then one of the salmon filleted on the dock was full of these…

I can only guess they are sand eels, you’d have to be fast to scoop them up out of their tunnels but this Chinook had four of them in his belly. Here’s a close up…

Onto the Octopus caught from yesterday, Chef Michael, blanched and salted it to get out the fishy flavour and slime…

Then onto the grill…

and seasoned it for the table…

It was delicious, having never being frozen I found it more tender than I expected. Fishing was a little slower today with a few fish coming in but a large contingent stayed in for part of the day and Kaili led a hike for the afternoon. The two biggest springs were caught by Gary and Keith…

As you can see Gary used an old Jedi trick by letting go his conscious self and not letting his eyes deceive him…in doing so caught a nice 20 pounder. Most of the guests spent the afternoon continuing their underwater training in the hot tub…

And to end the day off Tobey served “make your own sundaes for desert”…here’s a shot of the toppings (all home made)…

Never a dull moment here at camp Outpost.
