The Outpost Report: July 21, 2010

July 21, 2010

OUTPOST UPDATE: Another busy day starting with something very critical to all of our survival, a Chef’s birthday…

We Celebrated her “18th”....so much composure for someone so young. On the fishing front mother nature was generous again by providing lots of excellent fishing. Lets start with John and Steve who did a little bottom fishing in the morning with some excellent results…

They brought home a 25 and a 82 while Steve released a 170 pound breeder. Well done guys. Steve was the master of the house last night and presided as head judge over the staff-guest “Krud” game…here’s a picture of “THE JUDGE” in his official perch…

As the winner of last nights game I thought he made some excellent calls. Their guide “big fish Ben” was caught in this great on the water shot…you think guiding is easy?

Its full combat fishing out there! Our photo enthusiast Sev Jr. was out shooting some extraordinary footage today in new and creative ways…

He’s got some underwater footage that he’ll share with me tomorrow for the blog. He was out with new Tyee club member Keith…

Who demonstrates the proper way to wear your pin…with pride!
Together with Mike Panz they did the full meal-full day deal…

There is only one place in BC where you can do this in a day…Sev Jr. with his first Tyee. Gary was out with JP and got a really nice haul…

That’s a daily limit of salmon. Don and Keith “The Eagle” designed a new way to ride in the boats…

Chariot style, for full comfort. They came back with a nice 65 lb halibut…

I think guide “McLovin” is learning a thing or two from these vets!
Then Ken battled a fish for 3 hours with guide Stormin Norman, it was this long…

It was released after the battle, the Halibut measured 80 inches which calculates out to a 276 pound fish. In the afternoon Ken dropped a line and brought back a 25 pound fish to take home and came right back to relax in the hot tub…good decision Ken! Your released fish was the 2nd biggest of the season!
Our visiting Canadian Astronaut David Williams caught this perfect 39 lb Halibut and a couple of 20 lb springs…

After dinner Dave was good enough to share his experiences with a slide show of his two missions into space and his Canadian record of 3 space walks…

It was fascinating and made me think of the parallels between his missions and that of our guests visiting the Outpost. First YOU leave the earth’s surface and go into a low orbit to arrive in Haida Gwaii…

Above are the BC mountains as seen from 30,000 feet on the way from Vancouver. Second our guests go through underwater training just like astronauts…

You develop a new appreciation for the beauty of our planet…

And there is always the chance of alien encounters…

JP discovered this one today while Halibut fishing…Its been passed onto the chefs who are going to try something with it…stay tuned. However, as Whitney noted the food at the Outpost is much better than in space!
So you might want to try coming here first. Goodnight from the middle of nowhere.
