The Outpost Report: July 16, 2010

July 16, 2010

OUTPOST UPDATE: Let’s start tonight with another appetizing oddity from the dock. These 2 small clear marble balls were found inside a halibut’s stomach today by McLovin (Guide Mark Reid)…

They were somewhat oblong and had very distinct grooves. We’ve decided they must be the remnants of somebody’s eyes…a rock fish, lingcod or something that lives way down there. Any other guesses? Then we also noted all the small red parasitic worms on the inside of the stomach lining…Mark very quickly went to wash off his hands. It reminds me of how little we know about these fish, how they live and what they do.

It was changeover today and only 12 degrees…it’s been COLD this summer, actually I don’t know if you can even call it a summer. Fishing was mixed with a half dozen Chinooks caught and released the biggest was a 19 pound fish for Paul…

Who also happened to catch a nice 55 lb hali as well…

That’s a pretty perfect day! Dean who is here fishing with his son Logan got a couple of perfect Halis and a nice salmon…

Dean attempted to tell his son the reasons he caught the bigger fish, Logan like all sons doesn’t believe a word his father says.

Alex caught himself a matching pair of 18’s…

While Ray was battling something MONSTEROUS…

This is not a doctored photo, this was actual sustained effort over more than an hour. For 45 minutes the whole boat thought they were fighting bottom…and then the giant emerged…

At 82 inches in length this halibut would weigh close to 300 pounds. The team took some amazing video footage, popped the hook out and let this gal go back to the bottom where she belongs. Well done Ray what a feat!

I’ll end tonight with a photo from the ship wreck at Hippa…

Our steel is really no match to Mother Nature and time.

Mother Nature is in charge out here, were just visitors.

Until tomorrow,

Ken Beatty
