OUTPOST UPDATE: DAYDREAMS, NIL STAFF UPDATES & A FEW HOLIDAY DEALS

It’s that time of year: weekends filled with parties, offices busy before the new year and the weather in Vancouver is starting to freeze up. I haven’t been fishing since October and opportunities to cast a line are few. I know I’m entering the deeper stages of fish deprivation when I day-dream about where to go. The Thompson River is roughly 3 hours inland of Vancouver. It’s a beautiful high desert river without much around. I love the scenery: rolling hills, sand cliffs, long runs and endless sky…

If you drift the upper reaches in the summer you won’t see another angler and you’ll catch LOTS of rainbows (all on dries). Every piece of structure with a bit of depth will hold fish…if only Chinook fishing was so predictable…

The fish are healthy and so much fun! The Thompson is best known for it’s steelhead. The fish (if you can find them) are strong and large! The season to try is NOW…sitting at my desk I try to imagine the take of a fish like this…

Pictured is Kateri Clay (sister of OP server Kaili Clay) holding a 40+ inch BC monster. Locally there are some resident Dolly Varden and Bull Trout around. These fish spawn in the fall and follow the salmon runs to feast on eggs and flesh (of the dead salmon). They’re aggressive little fish and can make a day out of the city very enjoyable…

Notice the pale pink spots and very fine scaling. The big head and teeth make this fish a predator and meat eater.

You can clearly see the leading white edge of the pectoral fin distinguishing this as a char rather than a trout. Beautiful (although I think most species are beautiful), scrappy and reaching large sizes (the biggest I’ve caught is a little over 30 inches) I’d fish for “dollies” anytime…

Locally there are also a few winter/spring steelhead that have managed to survive the urban gauntlet and can surprise you with a strike like this “HOG” from last winter…

It’s pretty obvious what’s on my mind. What fisheries are you dreaming about?

Thinking about that Chinook from last summer? Or the one that got away? Better call Nycol or Jen to get organized for 2010, 604-233-9232.

Ever thought about catching something like…

I certinaly have and we might get a chance! THE WCFC 2009 NEWSLETTER has just gone to print and will be mailed within the next couple of weeks. Inside you’ll find some very exciting WCFC news…I’ll say no more but keep an eye out for it, its a great edition!

NIL STAFF UPDATE: What happen to your favorite staff off season?

NIL’s Kauri sent this report:

“here’s a photo from indo… Gettin Barreled”

I think that’s Surf-speak, and here he is “Getting Barreled” or at least looking pretty cool…

What a life; salmon in the summer, surf in the winter, I think you’ve got it sorted out Kauri, thanks for the photo. Todd’s right hand woman Lindsay is currently helping the family business in Penticton, BC by managing this lodge…

“Saddleback Lodge at night”…The website is www.saddlebacklodge.com which services skiers from www.apexresort.com. Looks beautiful Lindsay when can Todd and I come up to try some of that interior “Champagne Powder”?

With the HOLIDAY SEASON fast approaching Jen MacLean (WCFC merchandising expert) in a moment of generosity (which I can only guess was derived from watching a Christmas Carol last night on television ) is feeling particularly festive…

She’s put a few of YOUR favorite discontinued WCFC store items up for sale at massive savings. The following items modeled by our own Nycol can be yours for 50-75% off + tax & shipping (Nycol not included). Sizes and quantities limited. Prices and items are…

This woman’s SUN ICE jacket with removable sleeves is $20 (+shipping & taxes)…

Snuggle up during a cold Alberta winter with this Men’s heavy duty, insulated Canvas jacket for only $49.95 (+ shipping and taxes)

Just need something to throw on before heading out, try this unisex black fleece Stormtech full zip for an astoundingly low $20 (+taxes and shipping).

If interested call myself or Nycol at 604-233-9232 while quantities last.

That’s all for this week, as usual email comments, questions, stories and photos to kenbeatty@westcoastfishingclub.com.
