The Outpost Fishing Reports

The Outpost Report: April 12, 2010

April 12, 2010 | 1298 Views

OUTPOST UPDATE: I’ll start this week with winter OP pictures from Caretaker Pete who is into his 8th Herculean month of solitude in Port Louis. Pete does happily receive visitors from time to time, this is a picture of the herring seiner that he wrote about last week…

Below are a few shots of a snowy outpost…

Ugg that looks cold Pete

Doesn’t like you’ve been  out in the boat much lately?

It looks so lovely and peaceful, anybody want to go? The next picture I find interesting, not because of the rainbow but the clarity of the water. In the winter very little sunlight hits the north pacific and with colder temperatures there is very little algae growth and consequently a crystal clear ocean…that effect is visible here when you look at the shore line…

Onto staff updates; I’d like to mention we’ve hired the new chefs for the 2010 season which I will formally introduce next week. In short they’re a couple and are very excited to be part of the 2010 Outpost team. We’re equally thrilled to have them and look forward to their international experience and immense passion for food and the joy it brings to our guests. So stay tuned next week for their official introduction.

On the guiding front I’d like to introduce Mark Reid to the Outpost guiding staff.

This will be Mark’s first year in Port Louis and 4th guiding on the coast. Mark and head guide Pierre have worked together in the past and are happy to be reunited on the dock this summer. Mark is passionate about the outdoors and fishing and is a real pleasure to spend a day with on the water. Welcome aboard Mark and get ready for paradise…

Also joining the guiding staff for his 3rd year is the one and only Baboo (Bob Brown)! As in years past Baboo will be guiding part time and brings years of experience and a big personality to the dock. Those who fish with him tend to become life long friends. Welcome back Baboo and here he is last  year examining some perfect  halibut meat from a 35lber…

Todd McIntyre of North Island passed on this news tid-bit from April 11th outlining a dam removal project on the Olympic peninsula, with the hopes of re-establishing salmon runs in the system. Its great to see the tides of public action moving towards restoration and preservation of wild salmon…hopefully this will allow us more opportunity to do what we love.

“In what would be the largest dam removal project ever in the United States, the federal government last week requested bids to demolish the two structures – the 105-foot Elwha Dam, finished in 1913, and the Glines Canyon Dam, twice as tall as the Elwha Dam, finished in 1927.

Once the dams are down, it may take 10 years to re-establish the runs, but officials are determined the fish will return. Some will be flown by helicopter to the upper reaches of the Elwha watershed. To supplement the meager number of native fish, others will be raised in a nearby hatchery and added to the runs. Eventually, the runs are expected to become wild”

You might ask what does Todd know about this “fishy” stuff? Well good question because after 15 years on the water I was a little surprised last weekend watching him launch a boat…I guess thats how they roll at NIL.

That’s all for this week as usual send any questions, comments or pictures to  kenbeatty@westcoastfishingclub.com
