The Clubhouse Report - Sept 1 - STRONG BITE CONTINUES

September 3, 2013

The BIG BITES continue here at Langara, with chinook fishing now steadily improving. Our remaining surge of chinook and coho are now moving through the area, and we are experiencing good fishing on the east side. Have a look at Steve Kasteler and his 29 lb chinook caught yesterday deep off Cohoe Point, 150 feet on the wire.

Today we again fished deep off Cohoe Point, and Steves fishing partner Mark Davis grabbed this 31 lb tyee, in the am. Hopefully the picture I send down makes it and is posted here. Note how silver these fish still are. We also boxed a pair of 23 lb chinook and released plenty of chinook in the teens. The Coho are around as well, the ones I am grabbing are 9 to 13 lbs and they are snapping early in the am. I am fishing with a 3 ounce weight and am impressed at the hits and the fights. I forgot how coho fight so well, paired with a lighter rod, light weight, and a backed off drag. Was also impressed at the number of springs we are hooking and landing with the light setup, much more fun than the normal 8 ounce setup we are usually towing out the stern of the boat.

Kauri, and Kui are finding them up at the rocks, as Done said on Channel nine, "just come to the rocks"! Kauris guests the Holmes released a jim dandy 33 lber, well done guys. Kui is dragging 120 and 150 on the wire, sitting on balls he says, and boxing plenty teeners and the odd 20 plus lb fish.

Gallager is now trying out the guiding here at the Clubhouse, as North Island closed its doors for the season. We jammed him in a 25 footer, and it appears he is too tall for the Bimini, his head now so banged up he has a possible permanent concussion. Also borrowed ,young Jarod, who seems to be boxing more than his share of chinooks.

Definitely more room out there, with Oak Bay now finished, North Island done for the year, and Langara wrapping up for the season shortly. The east side is almost surreal, no boats at times, pick a point, not really any lions stealing fish to speak of. The weather is fantastic, the chinooks are again blowing through, and no crowds, this is awesome. The guests arriving in Sept. will love it out there!

Other news, the guides are not washing their hair for a few days, I think it might be some wacky competion or something, we do need some rain me thinks. Pat Simmons leads the way at day 3, his hair very glued to his head, very 1940,s, whereas Koreys is a giant puff ball of red. My hippaquarium is now being used as a guide bathtub, my washdown pump the shower, my console cover the curtain, these are really good times haha , rain is not so bad after all!

Also a congratulations to Laurie Mulligan and Hans A. who teamed up in the Chinook Classic out of Vancouver and snatched second place and ten grand, well deserved guys. I heard the derby was a huge success, top fish was 38 lbs. Laurie and Hans fish that area hardcore, and this is no fluke, so 10,000 should keep Hans supplied with tobacco, and Laurie can replace his Scotty Down-riggers with the new high speed digital riggers with the lighted counter, well done WD!

Well time to get to bed, hope you enjoy the scuttlebutt from Langara Island, more coming soon as the Canucks visit next week, stand by for a full report, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
