The Clubhouse Report: June 9, 2012

June 9, 2012

Fishing continues to improve, offshore waters are producing pockets of springs in the teens and low twenties, the west side has been the ticket so far this season.

We have had six tyee for the trip, largest today taken by Tim Sorensen, a 35 lb chinook. This was Tims first chinook of the trip as well, and it looks like he wrapped up top fish honours in his group, well done. Tim was in lucky boat 11 having ditched me for a chance at a tyee. We did share two days of ridiculous stories though, maybe the laughing scares the big fish into the kelp. Tim has been fishing here for ten years now, and this is his second tyee in as many years, grabbing a 42 last season, on virtually the same date!

Other notables, David Bunch snuck a 30 lber in this afternoon, Eric Friedland a 30, Gordon Cummings a 31 and yesterdays tide produced a 37.5 for Robin Silvester fishing in Predator 1. This fish was taken shallow off Lacy, Tims fish was hit on a mooching rod out the stern of the vessel, find the bait you have fish!

The bait was showing mostly offshore this am, like a mile out off Lacy, most of the fleet milling around zig zagging cutting each other off in a chaotic dance. As soon as one boat hit a fish, the ticket seemed to be to troll at the lucky boat, 60 to 80 feet off a rigger on the cable. These fish were mostly teeners, but after a few slower days, the doubles and infact all the hits made most of us happy. No sea lions out there to speak off either, so that was a break.

One of our guides checked out Green Point but it was a losing proposition, Jalun dead too. Seems the fish are spending time gorging on the tiny schools of extra large herring, I am jigging them and they are hawgs, up to 22 cm long. Nothing like a freshy, bloody and purple in color, think I know why the purple haze color is so popular now!

So we will see on the changeover tomorrow what weather and fishing we find, but as stated, after a slower start, fish are now building on the west side, soon, we will be in the pass, searching monsters and dreaming large, goodnight from the Club, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
