The Clubhouse Report: June 7, 2011

June 8, 2011

The winds are blowing 25 to 30 knots from the Northwest, but the fish continue to bite here at Langara. The westside is closed, with many fisherman hiding in the old mans spot, others win drifting Gunia down to Boulder. All in all fish are everywhere, and the anglers working the local hot tacks are producing.

I bombed out to Lacy in hideous conditions at 5pm tonight for a look, greeted with 12 foot breaking waves in a confused sea. How I talked Hugh Owen and Bruce into it I do not know, but I was hoping they had iron guts and new the wind direction if the stomachs failed them. I managed to get three rods down, and Hugh pronounced all rods were Bruce's. Wouldn't you know it, the weighted rod buckled and screamed and Bruce was hooked up. Fighting a stomach catastrophe Bruce did a great job, 15 minutes in the trough, Hugh coaching and letting me know how to get my job done. Finally in the net, a 27 lber, not bad for a single tack. We left the fish in the net, a big cluster of disaster, and pounded back to the lodge. Guests and guide safe and in one piece.

I was on the dock ten minutes when Todd Sharfe hit the warf with a 38 lb halibut, proudly swaggering up the dock with his carcass. Kui had a 28 lber with Mr. Noodle, Ed Anderson. Brent had a near tyee with Randy Lee’s party, so a few nice fish around. All the guides were rebuilding they're gear, the wind beat us down a bit the last few days.

For Bruin Bay fans, fish were blowing through there as well. In the am, Kory found a run in there, we followed and grabbed four in a couple minutes. Kory thought he had a monster but no, the first salmon shark of the season...six feet, lost in the kelp.

We are finding most of the fish shallow....weighted rods holding they're own, downriggers fishing 25 to 55 feet. Needle fish are present and spring salmon are as well in this bait. Things are improving each day, more fish each tide, look out tomorrow gang,
