The Clubhouse Report: June 17, 2012

June 18, 2012

Finally the rain has stopped and the wind has settled after a 24 hours of SE. Gales and a royal beating that was taken by all. Sideways rain, blustery winds and 10 foot swells are an adventure to enjoy one day, but enough is enough.

Our last trip saw three tyee, largest a 40 lber taken out off Cape Knox, the new in place to fish. Runner up was a 38lber, and a 32 lb specimen was scooped in Mutton aboard Predator 2. There continues to be bait holding on the west side, and plenty of teener chinook, with the odd surprise. Last Thursday the West was plugged with chinook, the winds wiped us out somewhat on Friday, although in our boats the West Side is ALWAYS open. That said the swells can be monstrous and a guided boat is the way to go in tough conditions. When the swell and wind are from the South West look out, you can have 15 foot combers that even intimidate the most seasoned guides. The fish are holding out there so we continue to take our lumps to produce good fish.

The inside has some fish now as well, and oh yes, Sea Lions as well, what a nice invention they are, that was not well thought out when they were invented. I was cracked myself from the screaming reel when the handles made contact with my thumb, personally carrying some resentment for the rock dogs as I write this. Seems free spooling your fish works somewhat if there is limited boat traffic, the lions seem to lose track of your fish and move on. Who said slack line is a big no no....seems to work.

Today saw a Miracle grab a 34 off Cohoe, I fished west and had a half dozen Springs , three about 21 lbs. Enough to keep busy. Jigged up some freshies and they were all inhaled by spring salmon. Also hit a string of cod on my herring jig, good for comic relief. Tomorrow looks dry and calmer so look out, should have a tyee or two to report on, until then, goodnight from the Clubhouse, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
