The Clubhouse Report: July 9, 2011

July 10, 2011

Saturday Night here at the Clubhouse and what a gorgeous day it has been. The winds calm, seas flat, our first tee shirt day I believe. Hardly a ripple on the chuck, what a day!

Today was a halibut day, and I believe every guided boat had a limit of halibut 30 to 90 lbs. We traveled west for them and what a pleasant experience on a day such as this. Yes this is the head guide talking about halibut, yes a primitive fishery but a quick task today. The morning show saw the likes of Shawn and Kui, Bryce and Brent all loading up on decent Butt. I think Kui's were bookends at 80 lbs.

I headed out the pass at 2pm with Dean Oskvig and Scott Straight with PCL and we went west till we found our spot, 10 miles west of Langara. Oh my our spot was busy, with Korey right on the A spot, Jordie in the fringe with CONMAN, oh and Chris hiding in the weeds on the edge, and yes Buderico on his private spot on the outskirts, the old skate hole.

This was the annual pcl halibut derby and what the heck, Korey was doubled up. There was Paul Douglas cranking in a 80 lber! So I corked them and dropped anchor 300 feet in front of the bow of they're boat. Gee I played that current and drift well, I came to rest 10 feet off Korey's port side. Glad he likes me, do this in Victoria and you will take a weight to the noggin. What the heck , they had a double and were done, and they had the halibut snapping like turtles right under my boat.

I was rigged and ready and as soon as Korey had his anchor lifting we took a wonderful 78 for Scott, that was easy!

I then rigged a Screamer special, a norwegian trick with Ken Tsang influence, and a 20/0 hook with a stinger, with a bait job influenced from Brian Tomicki....yes the smorgasbord, Fresh herring, salmon belly , and everything under outta the kitchen sink. Top Secret. Well minutes later my avet screams, head shakes, what do you do about head shakes?

Dean was the rod man and gee, he was making use of his hip, rod butt dug in, big grunts, a lot of sweat, and a fair time later, a monster at the boat. The reel let us down, lost the drag, and a screaming run to the bottom, Damn! I had to bring er up with no drag and with Dean carefully bringing the monster alongside, I rodeo showed it in the boat, Ed said my buckets cleared my tee top! That bugger beat on my boat good, everything upside down, guests clearing out to the bow, oh my my boat was a mess, beaten good. I had to go sit up in the bow and get real for a few, a bottle of water later I was good to go. Sure I have a couple bruises, day to day undisclosed injuries I can let you know about when the season is over, for know, upper body injury ha ha!

If you want to know the size get a hold of me when you visit or email and we will let you know! Obviously the smaller fish are the eaters, with fish of size suitable for the fryer! Pretty coarse meat, but ahh safe to say, Dean won the hali derby!

Okay, on the normal front, the salmon was decent in the afternoon. Out west Scott grabbed a 25 lber in short order at Lacy, we had a triple header of springs! Self guide Gerry and his wife Amber Pankratz had great fishing out that way, and Gerry said extremely good fishing the whole weekend. Paul Douglas had a 30 lb tyee, his first in five years, well done Paul, a noted Oilers fan.

Everyone out at Lacy was on them, as were the whales and eagles. The hits just keep coming, as Derek Jeter did today, a HOMERUN, for hit 3000, what style! Yes same goes here, fishing has been out of the park this year, and the halibut weather permitting, the best I have seen in many years!

Time for visits in the club, thanks for checking in,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Clubhouse!
