The Clubhouse Report: July 6, 2011

July 6, 2011

Another Hippa was released here at the Clubhouse today, a monster 56 lber angled by Trevor Rolph, guided by Todd Sharfe. The fish was taken off the DOWNRIGGER, 30 feet in the Gunia area. Yes with a long leader off the cable, imagine playing one of these giants with no weight on the line? No 8 ounce mooching weight, just you and a set of hooks, a swivel and an Islander reel.

Yes nice to have the option for sure, nice to have the WINNING combo aboard. You can fish old school or new wave, your choice. Personally I find with no weight I lose less fish, and the fight is more exciting without the half lb of weight attached. We are having great success in Parry Pass right now, lots of needlefish around and less lions. The mornings seem real ferocious with lions out on the east side, Jordie brought in a head nearly the size of his own. Yes the Sea Lions are getting they're share.

We fished around the island today, the weather has brightened and the hotspot was the REEF today, lots of 17 to 21 lbers with a 47 released by at tall super skinny guide you would swear was Todd McIntyre’s brother, Brent! So a few monsters in there too. I only had fish to 21 lbs, but saw some larger for sure. Bruin was dead, but the game was on in there. Funny to see everyone maneuvering and battling for zero fish today, not he spot to be. Kui hammered jacks at the point, other guides including Chutters had buckets of coho and jacks from Seath Point.

The hot fishing has slowed a notch, but hey, two over 40 today, and a 56, well done for those releases. Seems like this is the normal now, nobody thinks of clubbing one of these magnificent fish. In the scheme of things, maybe a small thing, but you feel great inside, and the look on those monster tyees faces as they swim off to continue on their journey, wow. What a positive thing to do if one has the fortune to encounter on of these hippas.

So off to bed, see what tomorrow brings in on the tide, exciting times here in Parry Pass and Langara.

Goodnight all,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Clubhouse
