The Clubhouse Report: July 5, 2011

July 5, 2011

What a day in here, 2 meter seas and 40 knots of wind, driving rain and oh ya, a 45 lb Chinook released for Phillp Ruault. Matt Conman guided the fish out at Lacy in a heavy roll and tide, driving stinging rain, and a downright blustery day. There were a half dozen tyees in the area, news is still arriving as I eat dinner.

We awoke to a hideous wind this am and soon we could not effectively fish the east side. I pounded out to Mcpherson for a load of 17 lbers, whales everywhere, bait, coho ,sealions stacked like cordwood, yes it was all going on. First time I have seen the lions playing with the whales on the surface, a mere ten feet off the boat. We lasted till 10:30, then had enough of the beating and had an early lunch.

The guys that stuck with it at Lacy did well, most guys on a tyee, the likes of Chris, Kui, Jordan, that I know of, so yes it was cooking. The reef had some fish too, and most of the fleet was there hiding, infact Cowards Point was even busy. The wind died on the tide change late this pm, and we all had good fishing out at Lacy, mostly teens and low twenties. The fog and rain had many of us thinking of Panama, but soon as a spring clobbers your bait, we all remember why this is one of the greatest fisheries in the world. So much life here this year, the herring seems strong, pockets of 50 ton here there and everywhere, good sized too, some measuring 22 cm. These are hawgs! I have been jigging them easily on my baitrod, and nothing like freshies for the pass fishing.

We are all licking our wounds after a great fish day here at Langara. Everything in the wheelhouse was flying today, yes the roll and chop reminded us this can be a wild dramatic pacific ocean. We all battled hard and won today, tomorrow looks nicer and the fish keep coming....yes this has been a good run for sure!

Goodnight from the Clubhouse,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
