The Clubhouse Report: July 25

July 25, 2013

Hello from the Clubhouse, the final night of the Culinary trip! Plenty eating and refreshments went down tonight for the guests, David Hawksworth at the helm tonight. By the look on the guests faces, me thinks they ate well and were looked after. The guides on the other hand are all about fish, large chinooks blowing by Langara at this very moment. Most of us are more concerned with the bait, the brine, the kelp, the tide, that is why we are here really. A fair number of us are here attempting to land and release very large chinook salmon with our guests, so a piece of old pizza or a shiny red apple and we are good to go. Add in a jug of coffee or six and game on, searching for HIPPAS.Reefs, rock piles, bottlenecks, back eddies, that is where these elusive monsters are found most of the time. Well not all the time. I was out angling with Ben Hochhausen, and yesterday morning he asked me to take him halibut fishing at 9 am. What the Sam heck? Screamer does not halibut fish in July or August, but hmmm how do I disguise halibut fishing and keep a rod down for spring salmon? So off to Green Point, we had scouted there last week, loaded with chickens, strong chickens as Pat calls em. 20 minutes later I had my skiff in 100 feet of water of Green, and sank my cannonballs down to the bottom, lets drag up a couple and get out of there. No boats around, hmm, bait, looks kind fishy, next thing you know, my bow rod is screaming in the holder, and I am talking no halibut. The line was screaming to the surface, what seemed like a half mile down the beach, did I hook a Hippa out the mud? Well two runs later, a large spring salmon was porpoising off my port side, Ben had him pinned alongside, much to our horror, blood pumping everywhere, what a mess. The fish had gulped this cutplug down deep, two hooks in the gills, one in the arch. So with no hope of release, this fish was dispatched and Ben will have plenty lox for his bagel this winter! See pic below of the two of us, note the Leafs hat....brought me some luck!

Ben also grabbed a 33 lber out at Lacy with me , fishing more conventional, in tight to the rock. I see Boat 5 grabbed a doozy, this am, Ron Rother the angler, 44.5 release! Pat also found him a 31. Doug Ellenor snuck a 38.5 into his net for a measure and a release, I did not get the details on this fish. Sue Zenko grabbed 33, another nice tyee, so eight tyee on the trip, not too bad. And millions of coho for those that looked...I ran into Bud off Lacy this am, he had his arms going, heavy hauling, double hauling, heavy sets of double digit northerns, he was a busy boy. I was not on em, to he sent me down to 100 feet, grabbed my share and got out of there, back to spring fishing. Ben wanted a final halibut to polish off his trip, so being ideal flat calm, down the anchor went and the heavy tide was snorting. We were pinned, and my float was down eight feet, dammit, never took note how hard the water was running. A quick look at my tide book, yup, blew it, 16 foot tide, but hey I am the Screamer. Was feeling more like a donkey, but down my lines went, and 58 inches of halibut grabbed ahold in short order....this fish tough to land as the tide took her way back of the boat, not to mention some other issues with my setup. 40 minutes later we had her in the boat, hook removal, and back in, no easy task, but that hali leapt when it hit the water. Pretty happy to rejoin her reef buddies in 280 feet of water. This Ben guest had worn me out, time to hit the docks. A big break tomorrow, we are sleeping in, changeover, no fishing on my boat. So time to tell a couple tales, watch Jordie eat too much pizza, and prepare for another assault on the large chinooks circling this island. Will keep you posted, golden week continues here at Langara, goodnight Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
