The Clubhouse Report: July 24, 2012

July 24, 2012

What an exciting day here at Langara, a couple more tyee to bring us up to five for the trip and a pod of Transient Orcas took care of a sea lion for all our entertainment.

Judy West had top fish of the day, sneaking in a 36 aboard boat 5, with an assist from Pat Universe, and Randy Rhodes grabbed a 31, details to follow upon receipt. The big news was the transient orcas taking care of a rather large sea lion off Pillar Bay out in the deep. What a sight, as the orcas flung the bugger in the air like a rag doll, not killing it outright, but for several hours teaching the younger calves how to hunt and kill. We were right alongside the action, top seat in the house, as each whale took a turn leaping in the air, sometimes with the lion in its mouth. The lion would then be released and gather itself up and limp along the surface, only to be driven back down with thunderous head butts and rag dolled worst than Brian Macabe in his fight with big Z Chara, a losing battle and a bad beating.

We took tons of pics and some film as well, so we will see what we have later tonight. One of the most amazing sights I have witnessed here and nature in a fury for sure. Perfect ending to a slower afternoon of fishing. You never know what you will see out there, what a day.

This am was scratchy, but I did find a 28 lb specimen off Lacy fishing with Glen Hanlon, and the fish gave us plenty of fight. There were a few other chinook in there too, but the biggy was snuck out of Cohoe Point. I see the Ruperts found a 24 fishing in Pred 2 with Bud, Bryce had a decent fish at the Reef, but really, it was slower today. Tons of feed around, and things look good. I gambled in the pm and tried Shag, but that proved futile, blew the shift. I think Pred 1 found a 23 somewhere down there.

The big culinary trip is in full swing, and this also means Chelsea the yellow lab is here for a shift at the clubhouse, greeting boats and guests and generally puting a smile on our faces. She might be full time on the dock for the rest of the season! Cooking classes, tours and wildlife viewing are in full swing this trip , as are hali charters, half day king fishing charters, and just about any combo a guest could dream of!

Okay, time to walk the dog, so off I am til tomorrow, standby for an update soon, goodnight from the Clubhouse,
