The Clubhouse Report: July 17, 2011

A sunny day, calm winds, temperature warm, gee, what a fun day here at Langara! The fish were biting for the incoming guests, a tyee was released at 35 lbs, a 15 lb coho was angled, I caught a record class herring on a jig, what a day in here.

The fleet concentrated out at Lacy today. A couple guides chased yesterdays bite down at the Cabbage Patch, striking out. Ryan had a 40 release yesterday but today he passed on to me the Patch was dry. Shawn nodded. Once the fog burned off Lacy was one of the most beautiful places in the world. A nice surf hitting the rocks, calm seas, so warm guides shed the raingear for the first time this year.

Kui found the bait ball and we were in business. I was fishing with Ron Keil and David Morse, sad to be missing Don Haggen this year, who will be back soon I know. Us Norwegians stick together, and the group in now, all had a great day. We fished relatively shallow and the mooching rods as well as the riggers were on fire during the tide change. We were fast and furious for two hours on Chinook and all afternoon on coho. Korey's boat grabbed a 15 lb lunker, wow, that is a big silver!

I took some time to jig herring, a lost art here at Langara, and thought on my first cast I had a coho on, turned out to be a monster near one lber, 24 cm long and a belly on it that rivaled a pinks. i iced her down and vacuumed packed her tonight, off to the biology department when I get home. I had a nice jag of herring aboard and headed off to the REEF for a few passes before dinner. I took one of those freshies, a nice bloody cut plug and sent her down on a back mooching rod 16 pulls, and next thing you know, clunk, there she screams, a nice Chinook. We played her out for 15 minutes before I slipped the net around a 28 lber. In that shallow water, amazing fights. The freshies came through again.

Conman released a nice 35 out at Lacy for the Lafarge group, well done guys. The coho were thick out there, growing a pound a week now, look out late August, a great time to visit. Large springs, northern coho....they are all Northerns ha ha. Yes look into those dates, this year has been awesome and the monsters are starting to show again, August looks promising.

Halibut continue to cooperate, nice easy fishing this year. You do need to head out west, but when the weather is like this, the boys going are reporting good times!

The east side of Langara is quiet, no reason other than Lions and a lack of bait. The wack of bait is hanging off the west side and the life out there is amazing. On a day like today, we are reminded how lucky we are to have a fishery such as this to share with our visitors. Fishing has been good everyday, while we are not seeing the 60 lbers as of yet, the medium sized springs continue to flood in here, really good times.
