The Clubhouse Report: July 15, 2012

July 16, 2012

Howling Northwest in here tonight, hopefully blowing the fog out for change day tomorrow, its screaming!

This past trip hosted by Marcus Chaulk was a busy trip, with everyone catching chinook in the teens and into the low twenties, with top fish taken on Pred.1 weighing in at 34 .5 lbs. This was the clubs only tyee this trip and it was taken off the slide at 10 am on Friday the 13th...lucky!

The first day of the trip, Thursday was very busy, as a run of smaller chinook, probably 3 year old fish stormed into Gunia Boulder and provided all those anglers there a chinook bonanza. The fish I encountered were mid teens for the most part, but all boats were hooking up. In the mix were a million coho and a bucket load of humps, so bait was flying as fast as the guides could cut and rig. I switched over to teasers and whole herring and sped up to avoid the humps, and noticed the coho increased in size and virtually no pinks hit me.

Boat 6 worked the REEF but proved very slow, one 15 lber in there, what is up with the pass? Inconsistent so far. Coho point was lioned out but hey, we had good fishing very close to home. The dock was littered with over a 1000 lbs of fresh salmon. Smiling faces and busy cutters too, and the weather was awesome. First sunburns of the year, farmers tans all around.

Today was a slower day, in the morning I snuck up to Cohoe Point and scratched out a morning with 5 fish to 20 lbs, fishing deep. We did have a 25 lb fish hooked and quickly inhaled by a lion, fish big enough he was choking and spitting, as though he was eating some old sheppard's pie! Pretty funny to see the tail hanging out the mouth, and the gulls snapping at his face, we made that dogs day for sure!

Jordie stuck it out for a 24 lb fish at Gunia. Pretty slow on the kings, but coho were around to top up totes with fish. The afternoon saw the wind pick up and start to howl, I tried a tack at Gunia, but was quickly blown off shore, so moved to Cohoe Point. A gong show in there with the odd fish, limited territory to troll this pm. We have a gale tonight, should settle down as the ridge builds and our high pressure solidifies.

So lets see what tomorrow brings us, a fresh run of springs would be a bonus. Talking with the guests tonight, most were very happy with the action they had this trip. The size was not here this trip. That said, Coho to 11 lbs now in large quantities, and several good spring bites lasting a few hours proved loads of fun. Until tomorrow, goodnight from the Clubhouse,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Clubhouse
