The Clubhouse Report: July 07

July 9, 2013

A beautiful night in here at Langara, fishing on the upturn and weather cooperating! The fish have returned and tyees are being caught, so things are back to normal out on the chuck.

Our latest trip started yesterday, Sunday, and things are off to a good start. We were out by noon, picking Cohoe Point as the destination, and were quickly into multiple hookups of chinooks, mostly 17 to 23 lbs. Below is a picture I took of Dan Hamhuis and a mid twenties chinook we released to start our trip. Hopefully it can be posted below.

Dan and Marty 3

After a busy couple hours Dan, his father Marty and I were off to Boulder in search of a monster. We find that some of the bigger chinook prefer the Graham Shoreline on an ebb tide, and we found some evidence of this after a couple hours working the tack. A bit after 5pm, and plenty chirping from Dan...and a heavy dose back from myself we were into a screamer, a fish that smacked both baits simultaneously. Dan and Marty had both rods corked and this fish was smoking line, is this the coveted Hippa that I have been fishing for?
Below is a pic of the boys hooked up together.

My turn to chip now, "if you guys blow this fish I might blow my stack". Ten minutes in and Dan shanked his hooks, what the hell? Pressure on Marty, please don't crack under the pressure! 20 more minutes and we had the fish in the back, Dans remaining hooks latched on to the side of the fish, Martys down the pipe, dammit, blood everywhere. We got her into the hippaquarium but the water soon was a crimson red, she bled out in seconds, not even an organ transplant could save this fish. So we took her in and took these pics below! The fish went 40 lbs, and Dan commented more satisfying than a slap shot top shelf, or something to that affect.

We saw Boat 6 with a 32 on the dock for Korey and his guests, so a couple nice fish. This fish was a Gunia fish, and was the only other tyee.

Today we had a slow day, but a great ending again a 530 pm fish...why do we head out early? I fished again with Marty Hamhuis and Paul Nessman, and after some tough chirping about my day and guiding skills, more like lack of skills, I showed Dan I had the dedication, commitment, passion, and skill to dig deep under pressure, and had Marty into another screaming fish off the slide, this fish was a tough one. A jump and we saw she was ripped up pretty good, where was her stomach? Many runs later and lots of maneuvering we had this nice 32 lb tyee in the net ready for release. Here is the pic of Paul posing with this beauty haha.

She swam away fine so lucky for this tyee, better stop getting into trouble me thinks, not much flesh left on that belly. The sun came out, wind died, what a nice evening. Praying I do not have to go halibut fishing tomorrow, tyee action is heating up,this is not the time to fish primitively for halibut. Hope to have a story for you tomorrow, thinking Dan is going to stick it to me with a monster tyee I can choke on, we will see...He did threaten to take me on but his dad Marty has my back, so all should be fine for the Screamer, like to slap a few pucks with him sometime, think I could show him a few tricks, until tomorrow, goodnight from the Club, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
