The Clubhouse Report - BEST JUNE IN YEARS

June 9, 2013

Hi again from the clubhouse here at Langara, where the early June fishing is extremely good right now! Thought I would catch up here and fill you in on what is going down out on the waters surrounding our island here. This week has been a fantastic week for chinook, more around and in better size than the last handful of Junes. We are finding many springs in the low to mis twenties, plenty in the higher twenties and five tyee for the trip, with top fish released at 43.5 lbs, angled by Patrick Whyte. Wow, theres one! This is the biggie so far at the West Coast docks!I see Justin Ginetz grabbed a 30 at the reef, Robert Klassen snuck a 33 in from Andrews, both these fish angled on boat 6, always a lucky boat. Cris Giovanetto had a 30 I believe from Boulder, and heard grabbed on the 29 footer, details to follow. The bite has been wicked in here for three days, deep, shallow, fish it the way you want to and you will be on fish. Today we changed it up and did our hunting on the flood tide at Andrews, and the bite was three hours of non stop heavy hauling. A patch of bait moved in, soon a school of herring possibly 10 tons, first spotted on the sounder, then feeding madly on the surface. I soon had a herring jig in hand, dammit those things are hard to unwind out the pack, fingers trembling, pressure on! Soon I had a small bucket of hawgs, on the 5th jig, a full stringer on my flys, and suddenly a downrigger rod, bounced and buckled, yes, a screaming spring salmon, this is no jack!My guest was Pat Downey, part of Tim Sorensens annual trip with his group. Pat has caught plenty of springs up here over the years and soon let me know "me thinks this is a tyee" I had my hands full of herring jig and flipping fish, but spun the boat around and we chased this fish through the fleet in hot pursuit. First time to the net the tyee rolled and an easy scoop for me, nice, pressure off, and a 35 lber in the boat. The fish had two hooks embedded in the gills, so no hope of a release, blood everywhere, he was done. Sometimes this happens, always prefer to let the tyees go.

Looking around there were fish everywhere, boat 5 had a nice tote, boat 17 had a 28lber among his heavy tote, nice fish at the scale. All boats had plenty chinook. We grabbed a nice halibut as well, Andrews was good to us on this day.For the afternoon we wallowed out to Lacy in very large swells, some topping the island, and again found the bite on, many springs in short order, but gee, hard to stand up in the boat. Needless to say, not much pressure and we were on em, deep, shallow, everywhere. The boys in the calm fishing the east side were plenty happy as well, flat and very good fishing. The rain was pounding, I am talking a royal beating, but fish were clobbering our baits all day. Pat stumbled on a rare early school of coho, boxing 6 lber s for his guests as well as his tub of kings. This is turning into a great or maybe a fantastic June, this first week in here a guides dream. many clients are not fishing the last morning, tagged out and enjoying a sleep in as will the guides! Well done guides and guests! With all the herring pouring into Dixon Entrance, holy jumping, we are going to be very busy guides the next couple weeks. Wave after wave can show up if this bait holds, and I am hoping you all get a chance to enjoy this fishery. Off to bed, a new group in tomorrow, we are on them!Goodnight from Langara, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
