The Clubhouse Report: August 9, 2011

August 10, 2011

Another great day here at Langara; calm seas, sunny skies, and to top it off fantastic fishing. Another great Hippa released, four tyee on the day, and many Chinook 21 to 27 lbs! Yes Golden Week is on an extension, August is proving to be the time this year for the monsters.

Omar Chu tackled a 53 lb fish with Conman, Matt as his guide, and Captain. Matt yelled from his wheelhouse he wanted a camera, I knew he was excited and had a monster. Matt was trolling spoons off the side when Omar nailed the big one. 45 minutes later, Conman was over the rail with a halibut shark hook and a balloon, thinking he had a nice halibut. What a nice surprise, a big black head and a yellow dot. This was a Hippa. Nice to see the guys release this one, well done. Looked like a party on the deck going on after that one.

Mark Gucker quietly released a 42 lb fish as well in the same area: the large chinook thanks you for putting her back. Imagine how lucky that fish feels swimming down the coast tonight, a second chance.

I fished with Mark Zivot and Doug Porozni and we had a great time releasing many fish in the twenties and highlighted by a 30 lb tyee release for Mark. The AM was steady, before lunch we hit the REEF and it was a turkey shoot, loaded with nice kings in the mid to high twenties. Fish after fish, and wow, do they fight in that shallow water. The setup is the diving ducks and the needlefish, both stacked in there. When the tide slows, fishing can become a crematorium in a hurry, the expression used when a guide has a spot to himself and hammers the tar out of them.

Doug had a smoker on at Boulder in the pm, but a sea lion smashed our dreams, what a bummer. As Brian Grange calls these fish, Frothers...something that happens when you lose a Hippa, frothing at the mouth! We hit plenty of chinook on the troller tack, back and forth at Gunia, Boulder, tons of boats, but plenty of kings.

Cris Dunne stopped by my boat to rattle at me that I spell his name wrong, it is Dunn, not Dunne, so those that were confused, it is now Dunn, not Done! or Dunne! Cris did well today he had a plugged bucket aboard as well. I saw Gary Hayden on fish, infact, all our boats seemed to be busy, and everyone had a few mid twenties in their bucket.

Tomorrow looks, sunny, hot and fishy, stand by for a full report,

Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
