The Clubhouse Report: August 30

August 30, 2013

Blustery south easterlies continue to pound us somewhat here at Langara, but the fish have regrouped and the chinook fishing has been on the upswing. The last two days have been an east side Langara fishery, with Coho Point being a hotspot and 200 feet off Pillar Bay being the other. The latter has been a deep fishery, trolling on the bottom or just about anywhere between 100 and 200 feet. A lot of these springs are laying there with mouths open standing on their tails as Simmons says, ready to choke down anything offered to them. These are predominantly feeders from what I see, with the odd one breaking twenty pounds. A few coho in the mix as well, but they have really backed off. Some of the guides found good fish at Andrews and Cohoe before I even got out this am. We had three tyee today on the board, and four total in two days. I think these fish are hit mostly at 60 to 90 feet on the wire. I heard Bud had a double of Lions, so those are in the mix still. Most of the totes on the beach had plenty mid teens in them, with the better fish, 18 to 22 lbs.Transient whales are working the area up at Langara rocks, not hard enough for my liking but they are on the search for a nice rock dog dinner. We are seeing the sunfish bobbing around as well, water temps now in the 50,s. One today was a mid two hundred lbs off Pillar Rock.So tomorrow does look wet, some wind of course, probably a 2 foot chop or so, but for those that can take a small beating, the fish are now biting. What the heck, a few waves over the rail, a face full of salty spray, a few rain showers bouncing off your Noggin, yes we are approaching fall fishing. Further to that Greg Garske is our new chum leader, top of the board now with a weighed in silver bright 18 lb DOG! Never seen a fish get as much attention, Conman weighed it three times. So off to the wrapper, time to hit the hay, goodnight from the Clubhouse, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
