The Clubhouse Report: August 23

August 23, 2013

An Irish mist greeted us today, what the sam heck is it? Was it a light rain? Fog? I do know it was wet, although warm out, and the seas were flat, and some fish were biting so a decent afternoon here at Langara. Brad Nelson and the PCL gang are here, Brad fishing with fishing partner Bill Longden. We headed out west and chipped away at the springs, Brad landing a 30.5 to start our trip off well and Bill snaking a 29.5 a couple hours later. We also lost a very nice fish at the boat, hooks popping after I had a long gawk at a nice bronzed colored body, we wanted that one for sure! Oh well, that keeps us fishing , and we will be back on the spot tomorrow. Pat found a tyee out there as well, and Cris slipped a decent tyee into his boat, so there is some size around. Plenty of bait as well, looks like herring to me, all good signs for the FFK starting next Monday. Should be a riot this year, time for me to grab a decent fish. The last trip was a good one, with ten tyee landed, top released fish a 35 for James Hoffman. The Northstar group snagged five tyee, including Scott Shepherds 35 lb fish from the Westbank. Linda Pearson grabbed a 37 the hard way, having to run over a rockdog, hand to hand combat, before recovering the body of a headless tyee that weighed 33 lbs. Pat netted that corpse and won one for the good guys. Not a great photo, and a lot of questions, but yes, well done Linda, a nice tyee!I angled with Dave Climie, his boys, Paul and Jeff and John Fader. John grabbed a 33.5 the opening afternoon on the westbank, and I have to say we hammered the living tar out of them, coming in with our limit of chinook, eight, all over 20 lbs, We were hitting triple headers, some of these fish 26 to 28 lbs, more springs than I have ever seen in this area. Looking around I saw all six of our big boats smacking them, the best opening day of a trip in a couple weeks. We snuck a 31 lb tyee in for Paul Climie, out at Cohoe Point, a couple days later. This was Paul's first trip salmon fishing, and we spoiled him. Paul also snuck a 14 lb coho over the side and a 29 lb ling, a fish he was requesting for his winter supply of fish and chips. Dave and John have been fishing here for many years, and we have had a lot of laughs and plenty of good fish over the last decade or so. The coho have slowed down, but things are still happening here. Plenty chinook slipping by, and keeping us busy. The top end of Grahame Island has slowed right down, so the pressure is out west and Noname down to Cohoe Point. We are finding them deep, and midwater, and with so much bait around things continue promising. The Lions are starting to become a source of frustration out at Cohoe Point, it is a love HATE relationship. In other news Bud shaved his beard off, startled the hell out of me in the bunkhouse! Pat is giving wool lectures to anyone who listens out on his porch, and is now wearing a lime green very light rain jacket, hey, just saying. Conman and Korey are shaking with anticipation for the coming Elk Season, Korey winning a draw for Vancouver Island. I think all the guides are going with him. Should be quite an expedition. Well time for a snack and sleep, morning comes early, and Brad wants another tyee! Goodnight from the Clubhouse, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
