The Clubhouse Report: August 2, 2011

August 3, 2011

Sunny skies, flat seas and big fish, yes, what a day here at Langara. Gunia Point has come back alive, the Hippas are migrating along they're normal route, guiding is once again predictable and hugely exciting!

I fished with Dave Golten, Dan McCaw and Eric Gerow and we had a nice fish in the am just off the triangle at Gunia. I felt I was being out fished somewhat the first pass or two, saw Buds boat with a buckled rod, Korey chasing fish, putting on a show, so sorted my gear out and came up with a purple dummy flasher, with a gold flash. The second that flasher was clipped on to the rigger cable and sent down to 40 feet, we had a screamer, a fish peeling line heading due west through the fleet. We tossed our tackle into the boat and gave chase. Oh no, a single guided boat would not cooperate, I was in a full panic, Yamaha 225's in full reverse on top of our fish, literally had to nurse the fish around his bow, his guests looked stunned. A 27 foot whaler bearing down on a Hippa, nothing is going to stop it. We battled the boat and won, yes WINNING felt fantastic. Another 20 minutes and we had that Hippa to the boat, okay, I now knew why there was the crazy runs: she was hooked on the pectoral fin...two hooks safely set. After an easy net job we had her in the live tank, She measured 41 lbs, and I did find a single yellow dot.

Dan McCaw angled the fish masterfully, and we did the right thing...what we all should be doing, and revived the fish, took a pic, and released her in the kelp. She swam strong and had a happy look in her eye, a second chance and no headache!

We had good fishing for the next two hours, Dave grabbed a 13 lb coho in the mix, he now has his four coho, all over 12 lbs! I notice we have 16 tyee for the trip, with a day to go. There must be six or seven over forties on the board, I know Bud Stafford has now got his boat going, grabbing two over the forty mark yesterday. I think Bud has more tyees this trip than in his previous two months, he is now officially on em. I see Korey's guests snuck a 34 on the board, I know Ryan's guest snuck a 41 release on a 602 plug out at Lacy. Thankfully most of these fish are being returned to find their way home. We need these fish spawning!

Halibut continues to be a winning story, one of the best years in here ever. I snuck out west and grabbed three at 70 lbs in short order. Yes this is a primitive fishery, I know. My boat looked totaled, slime and meat everywhere, blood and guts, a real horror show for sure. The hali though, are biting. Bryce has a spot close in to camp and is grabbing nice 60 to 70 lb fish, today with Dave Golton and John Fader...John has all his fish for the trip! Dave has a chinook to go! This weather is crazy good this week, summer finally, calm seas mean easy halibut!

I will have guest names tomorrow for all the tyees...and more on the way. August is proving to be the time for size this season...this wave of fish is continuing. I should have a good story for you tomorrow, stand by and check back soon.
