The Clubhouse Report: August 19

August 19, 2013

A rainy evening in here tonight, southwest wind humping, all the guides cowering in the dry room. Our first taste of rain in weeks, and some lumpy water to boot out on the westbank.Fishing remains strong, lots of springs and some decent coho. The coho have slowed down but the first 16 lb fish was brought into the dock today, courtesy of boat 23.

Fish of the day and trip was taken aboard pred 1, a nice 42 lb fish angled by Rob Colcleugh. A 36 lb fish was angled by Rob Zakresky, this fish sniped late morning from the reef. Gurpreet Sawhney grabbed a 30 at coho point as well so a few fish of size coming by the familiar spots.A few other tyee taken, Harry Pokrandt grabbed a 31 lb fish, Scott Speed a 31, Craig Borland snuck a 32 in, Alex Rothwell a 33. And finally Jason Beales had a great release, a 33 lber from the westbank, well done Jason. Our previous trip saw 19 tyee, so things have slowed up a bit for size, but volume is still here. This am out at Cohoe Point the springs were thick in the high teen size, we were shaking them like humpies. Every time the wire went down your cutplug would be smacked, it was a one rod fishery for three hours. Now Bud did snipe a tyee here, but most of us were filling the checkers with high teen fish, some in the low twenties. The fish were hitting at all depths, just pick one. Looking around I saw all guided boats hammering the tar outta them, not big fish, but smilies just the same. The weather the last two trips was outstanding, Friday was the warmest day of the season, I was hearing reported cases of bat wings, especially in the Cohoe Point area, zero breeze. Us westcoasters refer to it as muggy. I know, spend a week in Florida in April, now that is muggy. Just the same, too hot for the guide pants, jacketoff, yes everyone had an amazing day smacking chinook salmon and Coho!So this week ahead looks decent, weather looks showery but hey, the summer has been fantastic thus far. My recommendation would be to get up here and grab some fish, the fishing has been steady if not fantastic all the the way through, many happy campers and guides for sure.Off to my bunk, it is time for a sleep and some mouth breathing, morning comes early, goodnight from the Langara, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
