The Clubhouse Report: August 09

August 9, 2013

Just returned from the Westside where an amazing whale show is underway. Humpbacks bubble feeding aggressively, in fact as I was trolling slowly against the tide I was overtaken by bubbles. Oh NO hold on! Up popped six heads, mouths gaped open completely surrounding my skiff. I am talking three feet off one side, six feet off the bow, maybe ten off the stern. Pretty hard on the nerves, both my guests hooked up on smaller fish, but what the sam heck? Way to close, we were in the middle of mayhem! The bait ball was about a half dozen football fields in size, Bud was whaling on jack springs and coho, the life out there was amazing.

The fishing was outstanding for the trip Aug 4 to Aug 8. Top fish went to Gary Hayden who released a 45 down at Boulder, and a 40 out at Lacy on the same day. I saw Gary hook the 40 out west, fishing with Korey, right in tight to the rock. I was out a bit, so zoomed in to find a nice bait ball, hmmm better drop on it. Soon I had my guest Jim Nelson on a screaming chinook, this fish bit as I was checking my cut plug. I no sooner unclipped the line and whamo, theres one! On first glimpse, wow, this is a pretty nice fish, not Gary's fish, but pretty darn close. I estimated its size to Korey while she was still swimming beneath the flat calm seas, " a pound smaller than your last one" I barked.

That she was, 39 at the scale, a very happy Jim and Susan, visiting from Texas, proud as heck with Jim's first tyee, third place in size for the trip. What a day for Gary, two 40,s now that is the meaning of on em!

Other notable fish, Holly Gucker released a nice 35 fishing in boat 11 with Ian and father Jack! Nancy Schneider angled two tyee, a 31 and a 33 with Bud I believe. Duane Schneider grabbed a 30 as well! Emily Smith had a 34, I think on Ryan's boat, fishing a long way away from Shaun. Hani Faris and his favourite guide grabbed a 31 on pred.1. Russ Jeter a 30, Peggy Sue Hughes took two tyee, at 31 and 32 lbs, finally Gail Gallelli had a 32 to round out the trip.

13 tyee was nice, but the shear volume of chinook was crazy at times. There were hours where two rods were all you could realistically fish, as soon as you hit 80 feet on the wire, clunk, another chinook. Now most of these fish were in the teens, but I am talking oodles of them. You could walk on the backs of the coho ! In fact with polarized glasses on you could see them everywhere on the surface out west, very large schools mixing in with the chinooks, combined with the dead calm seas was a fisherman's dream. Countless times I would see nice fish grabbed dead discarded cut plugs slipped overboard, the waters were teaming with life, crazy. I bet I had a couple dozen fish grab my bait while hooking up to my release clip, it was whacked out there.

This afternoon hmm what happened? A huge tide, screaming currents, my lines tangled many times, where did the springs go? Sure there were some, but not like last trip. There was a 36 on the board, no details yet. We had a look at Gunia, lioned on a pink, and got out of there. Boat 17 had a tote plugged with Jacks, coho, and very small halis, Bud had a 16 lb coho, but everyone had a scratch it seems. My tote was no screaming hell, but the whale show was indeed a shift saver. Plenty bites, a billion coho around, so for the first day of the trip, okay. Have some work to do on the springs tomorrow, so better get out of here and hit the hay, six hours I am back at it...how deep is it here? How many feet above sea level are we? Is this salt water? Yupp better cram for my questions tomorrow, thank goodness for google! Goodnight from Langara, Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
