The Clubhouse Report: Aug 18, 2011

August 18, 2011

Looks like a dry calmer day ahead here at Langara, as we get ready to head out with our new group. Fishing picked up again yesterday and here is a quick report.

I fished with John Simpson out off Lacy yesterday , out in the deep and in the big swells as it had blown South West a few days. We fished in 200 to 300 feet of water, trying to drop deep on bait balls. It was working, we were hitting fish at 150 to 175 feet deep off the rigger, and these fish were high teens up to 25 lbs. Lots of them too, John confirming this stating this was the hottest spring bite he has ever witnessed here. We hit great coho as well, grabbing a 14 at 60 feet off the cable. It was on fire out there, rough but worth it. I saw some good buckets of fish from Done’s boat and Korey’s as well.

John and his group left for Calgary in the mid afternoon, so I had some time to try a local hotspot to the dock. Arden, the store clerk was eager to get out on a rare opportunity for an afternoon fishery and we headed over to the REEF as Bud tipped us off there was a few fish on the tack. Wow, it was going off in there, a crematorium. We had nice mid twenties chinook every pass, Arden had five nice chinook on off her side of the boat. She was dropping the rigger to 24 feet and rigging a cutplug, dropping it back 25 feet off the cable. That combo was grabbing them. I fished 38 feet with a dummy flasher and I smoked a few as well. Fast fishing in there, and so much fun. The sounder was lit up with bait and fish, chinook were stacked like cordwood.

Doug Gowland snuck a 50 in the boat and released it at Gunia, fishing with Todd. I know Doug has been looking for that one for years so well done. That is fish of the trip, good work Clearcut!

This last trip was productive, no reason it will not continue. I am looking at these big fish over 40 and you know what? We get more over 40’s at Langara here, month after month than the rest of the B.C. coast. Looking at lodge reports up and down this coast, over 40’s are the norm most trips in here, not so in most other locations. The top end of Graham Island is the place to find large chinook, not to mention the coho and Halibut off the west side, what an area to angle and guide in.

Now I have to go, guests are waiting...
