Outpost Update July 8 ~ "And the bite goes on!!"

July 8, 2014

Summer time in Haida Gwaii is somewhat of a myth. Does it ever stop raining here? Do relentless gales ever stop blowing? Well, they do, and savvy guests and anglers make sure to hang on to those prime July spots exactly for those reasons. There is no place quite like it in July. Light winds out of the west, manoeuvrable seas and hungry Chinook Salmon make this time of year the absolute best time to be here.

*Beautiful Port Louis! As we waved the Boeing boys goodbye, we welcomed some familiar faces from the Delta group. Although day one was a little challenging as everyone was settling in for a 4 day trip, Steve Merritt was able to sneak in a respectable 31 pounder. Day 2 was one to remember with everyone deciding to go south for the Freeman journey. Clearly a good choice as guest after guest came back with tons of great fishing stories. Some of our guests decided to celebrate Canada day in style!

Let it be known that Bruce is a true purist as he still uses the old and trusted Longstone reels. That being said, this very fact might have cost Bruce a sizable bet against Ken Bowden for most Chinooks landed in one day... Islander vs Longstone...hmm..Sorry Bruce!

*"Hey David, sorry to bother you, but could you elaborate on the rather harsh conditions out on the rugged West Coast please?"In the end, the Delta group left us with wide grins and sore biceps. Till next year guys thanks for a great time! The weather kept holding strong for the weekend group Orex, spearheaded by Gary Cope & sons and Ross Wilmont. World class gentlemen all around, the Orex group proceeded to methodically fill up their dance card over the course of 3 bounty filled days. From our end of things, at the KRUD table, Gwen Gerryts managed to outfox all her workmates and all of our guests to finally lay hand for the first time on the coveted jacket! Unreal finish between her and Hannah. Well done ladies! One more for the inside staff!

The new champion!!

*The new champion! The very next day, clearly still on a roll, Gwen went out fishing and caught this beauty!

OP Tyee! 28lbs..haha Notice the jacket which Gwen now wears at all times!

*OP Tyee! 28lbs..haha. Notice the jacket which Gwen now wears at all times! The Orex group finished strong on the last full day where Gary Korzenowski fought and caught a beauty 33lb tyee, eclipsing Dave Stockton Jr's 26 from day 1. Dave would find a nice consolation prize in the dying hour of the day, releasing a monster 180+ Halibut! The first week of July has been nothing short of extremely awesome, but I have the feeling that the best has yet to come. The weather keeps getting better, the fish are biting and there is nobody else around to catch them...Tough life, I know! Well on this, I think I'm gonna go fishing!!Thanks for sharing our passion!Kuiama St-Gelais, WCFC Outpost
