Outpost Update ~ July 6-9 "It's not for everyone"

July 10, 2012

The Eagle Totem in the OP dining room is both stoic and symbolic of both the magesty of Haida Gwaii and the spirit one needs to fish & survive here...

You must persevere, have the strength to handle the tough times and the talents or talons to take advantage of the windows that present themselves.

Talking about windows...travel here today is much easier than in times past...

Here's a look through "your window" on the 2 hour flight from Vancouver which takes you over the largest remaining intact temperate rainforest left in the world...I'm not sure how long it would have taken the Haida to journey that far by muscle and canoe...and I'm not sure how far south they would have traveled...anyone?

For you, our guests...its a comfortable flight and once in masset (if you're lucky like Ben) you'll co-pilot the choppers...

...all you have to do is "switch on" the "flux capacitor" the pilot will show you which button it is...

...and magically these machines work taking you back in time to the OP...where it looks like it might be one of those tough times...

The boys were unphased as they walked off the chopper...

Nick, Gary and Don were ready for anything.

On Friday "anything" is what they got...

Big wind, big waves...a few boats braved the outside for some wind drifts of the fish hook reef.

Where did you go...

...oh there you are!

There is some comercial fishing activity going on but they're just hard woking guys trying to make a living and it doesn't seem to be effecting us all that much.

Fish on for golfing legend Dave Stockon (1974 runner up at the masters) ...

Fishing with his son with Dave Jr. (Former Pro Golfer and instructor)...they gave guide Gordie some coaching tips "on the greens" which led to Gordie's first win on the pool table and earned him the coveted "green jacket" at KRUD night this trip...

His first win amongst a fierce and competitive crowd. A sure indication of the Stockton coaching magic...The jacket fitting assisted by Dave Jr who finished 3rd...Well done to both Dave Jr. and Gord!

Back out on the water the fish were there and being caught...

2011 Guide Adam (up for a spell) and Ben show off a healthy one.

Patience did pay off and on Sunday it was beautiful with most boats heading south to take advantage of the weather window.

The results...

Great fishing and fantastic conditions...Kennyb and Brian holding a perfect high 20's take home fish.

Ben happy with his Tyee (36 lbs)...

Back at the dock there was plenty of excitement...

Brian, Dave, Bill, Ben, Dave Sr. and Gary all pose for a "how much did that weigh" photo.

Totes were full...

...with Halis, salmon and a small variety pack of rockfish.

Dave caught one with "Ol Yeller" that was a hefty 35 pounds...

...but dare I mention the biggest of the trip...

...Kennyb and Paul released this 40 lber

The Outpost isn't for everyone but if you've got the patience to wait out your opportunity, its the best fishing in the world combined with an intimate environment that is 100% unique on the BC coast.

However...thats just my opinion.

Good night fromt the OP

Ken Beatty
