Outpost Update July 17th ~ fishing with Ben-efits

July 18, 2011

Lets start tonight with the winner from the July 15th "family Affair" competition... Mumma Jo Reid whose entire family is here at the lodge was the first to respond so instead of awarding one of her family a prize we've picked out a prize for you Mumma Jo and imagined you were here with us...

John, Jamie, a space where Mumma Jo should be, Hannah and Marky-Mark... show off the prize thats coming your way!

I'm going to stop with the accolades of the season...it was another dream day...here are just a few of shots out on the water under blue skies, calm seas and great fishing...

Adam and crew silhouetted in the sun with fog covered Haida Gwai in the background.

Michael and Panz enjoying the best of the best

The Ship wreck at Hippa reminding us how treacherous it can be out here.

John earning his catch...notice the t-shirt and sunshine...it was summer out today!

Carol was proving women can enjoy this just as much if not more than men. Which brings us to the title of tonights blog which was a quote from Gladys who when being assisted by Guide "Benny Big Cakes" coined the phrase "fishing with Ben-efits"... yes ladies we've got a dock full of rugged hunks who at times have to resort to "hands on instruction" to make sure you land the big one.

Boy I'm getting cheeky.

Back at the dock the final product looks fantastic...

Panz can do this with his eyes closed, slipping off the last rib bone on a side of halibut. After 8 years of guiding 100 days a year (not including the personal fishing) and cleaning an average of 6 fish a day I'd guess he's cleaned between 5000-10000 fish thus far...and he does a beautiful job of it.

Dan cleans up a salmon...

The meat almost glows...a few hundred miles away in Vancouver this would sell for 15+ bucks a pound. One of the best ways to treat your catch is to send it to seapak where they can process fish into 1 and 2 pound chunks. We keep those fish here fresh on ice...

In this shot dockhand Dewy (Andrew) scoops out some ice to pack down the days catch. At the end of each trip we send it to Masset where Debbie (who runs seapak) processes the fish, vacuum packs it and freezes YOUR catch, ready to be sent out in 1-2 weeks. Its THE best way to treat your product and get the maximum use and least waste of this precious resource.

Todays Stats:

  • 10 Chinook to the dock
  • 2 Tyees
  • 100+ chinook released
  • 7 halibut weighed in from 33-94 lbs
  • Coho to 11 lbs
  • rarely able to get 2 rods down at once

We're so fortunate.
