Outpost update ~ July 13-16 "Whale shows"

July 16, 2012

Hi everyone, its been a bit of a mixed bag this weekend with sun, rain, calm days and now...currently blowing 30 knots from the NW.

Here are a few of the higlights and stories from the weekend...starting with a slight detour on friday where our Jazz flight had to wait out some fog in Masset, giving our guests a chance to visit...

Long time guest Mike with daughter Michelle who's be waiting 10 years for her dad to take her to the Outpost...had to wait a little longer.

By the afternoon changeover did happen and everyone was fishing down at Hippa...

Conditions and fishing were excellent, lots of fish, sunshine and calm seas.

Marky-mark gets Michelle into her first salmon...

...which apparently was worth the 10 year wait...

And a whale show ensued with a group of 6 humpbacks bubble net feeding...

The boats did their best to stay clear but the whales were totally focused on feeding and popped up here and there around the boats for a portion of the afternoon...

...we try very hard not to get this close...but when the whales decide to surface right beside us there's not much we can do trolling at 2 knots.

From a perfect day one the wind started to pick up over the rest of the weekend...

The crew still managed to get our guests into fish...

Michelle continues her love affair with the OP by catching and releasing this 200+ pound halibut, the biggest of the year thus far and proudly stands by her name on the release board...

For their good kharma her and Mike still caught an additional 2 beauties to take home...

Other highlights included Brian catching his first ever salmon with Guide Sam...

Ian's 32 lb Tyee, the biggest of the trip...

Some big waves started crashing into Brock Island on Sunday...

...but with some effort the fish were still hitting...

Ol Yeller helps Mike play a nice one.

...and the guys scraped around looking for whatever calm haunts they could find...like Ottard bay...

Where it was picture perfect.

The whales also put on a show close to home doing some tail slapping in the bay...

..which went on and on for about 30 minutes...

In the evening spirits were high with toasts all around...

Thanks to Les, Clay, Paul, Gladys, Michelle, Mike, Randy, Ian, Mike, Scott, Brian and Randy.

The fishing has been very good this summer, we just need to be able to get to the fish...weather can be a hinderance at times. So far its been a strong season and we're hoping it keeps going.

ps...Just in case you're wondering where the The Krud jacket ended up this trip...
