Outpost: ready, set, go…

June 19, 2011

Outpost Update begins with an appology...our internet has been down and its been impossible for me to do reports, tonight its up and running (for now) so I'll squeeze in what I can.

We're on day 2 of the OP season and both the fishing and the weather are co-operating with a number of Tyees and 100+ pound halibut caught & released already!

First, lets turn back the clock... "It was the night before for opening"...

...and all through the house...everything was perfect...just the way Ken likes it. As a send off for our hard working start up crew Chef Jordan and Rebecca made fish & chips...while Justine poured some sprakling wine and Mike relaxed for a moment after installing our new reverse osmosis machine (which makes beautiful water by the way)...

Then we all made a toast to good fishing, happy guests and a great 2011 season...

later that night our friends on the coast guard ship the "Arrow Post" (which was parked in Port Louis) invited us to come over and watch the Stanley Cup final, notice the Canucks flag...

A small group made it over for the last 6 minutes of the 3rd period...

It was a great venue considering where we were, the last 6 minutes of play...not so much.

Opening day at the OP... the table was set...

The guides & dock staff waited for the helicopters...

From left to right; Pierre, Mike, Andrew, Adam, JP, Ben, Mark and Linden.

Then the moment was upon us...

The first S76 approaches the pad as I stroll down to meet the incoming guests...

...a perfect landing...

...and the season is underway as longtime client Mike (on the right) arrives with his group of merry men (and 2 women), Erv at his side.

Jason and Jeff show off the latest and greatest new Helly Hansen guest rain suits and life jackets.

Right out of the gates the fishing is HOT with long lines at the weigh scale...

...and a lot of nice Chinook out there for everyone...

...with boats doubling up and very fishable water.

Briton was feeling generous enough to share his catch with a sea lion...

...I think the sea lion got the better of that deal. Friday had a few fish in the 29 lb range but we had to wait for day 2 to break that Tyee mark...

Grant was the first through the mark with a 31 lber...with a number of other fish pushing into the high 20's, below is guide Mark with Jeff and his 27 lb fish...

We also had our first 100+pound halibut release by Steve and the biggest Chinook at 32 lbs caught by Pete. Lots of action!

One of the most shocking events of the last 48 hours was the result of the first 2011 KRUD match which had an "all guest" final 3 and Tia (One of our female guests from Montana) shocked the house as she decimated the field with ruthless shots to come out the victor...and only female (other than Kaili Clay) to win! Well done Tia, no small feat.

I hope to have our satelite connection issues solved soon so I can post daily.

Until then, we're well underway here in Port Louis and fishing is GREAT!
