Outpost: June 23 “Chinook Mania”

June 24, 2011

Outpost Update...you're not going to believe the stories but today was upgraded from best in five years to "The best day ever"..

...and what else could you say after (one boat) released 50+ chinooks 4 of which were tyees...(and back to the dock by 5pm). I wouldn't believe it unless I'd had similar days out here (which is one of the reasons I came to work at the OP), you start feeling guilty about hooking so many fish...but at the same time can't help yourself.

Its going OFF at Hippa right now, you can't keep the lines in the water...and all the boats that went down there in the morning had easily 20+ chinooks on...most all of which were released unharmed...

Not only that it was sunny and calm, here's Al enjoying the GREATEST day of fishing in his life...

Here's Panzer and Jim with another nice release of so many...

I can't talk about it any more, lets switch topics...how about Halibut?

It was the same story, 2 releases over 100lbs today and TONS of fish in the 20-60 range...

Deb and Sandy decided to keep a couple to take home to Colorado. They told me they were into 17 fish in the morning and released one of the monsters over 100 lbs. Ok thats crazy...

forget the fishing what else happened today?

After being played out Deb and Sandy did some hiking and beach exploring...

Walking through the wilds of Haida Gwaii, very cool

After hearing the fishing was so hot and not having a boat I hopped on my paddle board with the intention of catching the tide down to Hippa (7 miles)...

Well...I made it to Brock Island (quarter of a mile)... "but I still haven't found what I'm looking for"...landing a chinook for the SUP.

Back at the lodge we encouraged the guests to help us (WCFC & QCI Salmon Unlimited Society) fund salmon enhancement and stream restoration in the local areas that produce the fish we love to angle for...

Thanks to the guests that participated in the 50/50 raffle, our owners will match your contributions and the good work will continue, if you want to read about the specific projects funded through these efforts pick up one of these binders (at any of our 3 northern lodges) that detail all the sites and projects...thanks again everyone.

Lets end tonight with and apple pie explosion...

Oh lordy...if you were here you would have had the greatest day (of fishing) of your life!

Tomorrow...next week...next month...you better come if you can!
