North Island Lodge "Ron Brown Tribute"

July 25, 2013

Ron Brown – Reeling for Ronnie Fishing Tournament Established in 2009 shortly after Ron passed away, the Reeling for Ronnie Fishing Tournament was the perfect to tribute to an amazing man. Growing up on the west coast Ron was introduced to Salmon fishing by his father who loved to fish the “hole in the wall”, “Gower Point” and other long time Vancouver area fishing holes. Soon his fishing horizons broadened. Over the years Ron experienced Hakai Pass, Langara Island and beyond. Fishing and boating the inside passage with Frank Berke and Bill Howard along with his wife Gwen and their families, to as far away places like Sitka, Alaska. Always a fishing rod in hand.

In the mid 90’s Ron and his wife Gwen packed up everything and moved to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to live the dream. Prior to his departure south Ron made one more trip to Langara Island where close friend Richard Lock and others joined him. Richard quickly fell in love with the area which spawned numerous trips with friends, family and members of his company on an annual basis.Ron’s time in the small community of Isla Mujeres was very active and he quickly become fluent in the language. He had a soft spot and helping hand for the local community and expats alike. When Ron was in his mid 50’s he passed away from an unexpected and rare illness. A life force extinguished far too early.

Gwen, Richard, Frank and friend Peter Zukow were determined to create a long lasting memory of Ron’s life and his love of fishing and helping people. Thus the Reeling for Ronnie Tournament was born in 2010, taking place annually at the North Island Lodge in the Haida Gwaii. Now a registered charity thanks to the determination of Richard Lock. The Ron Brown Scholarship Fund has been set up to honor Ron’s memory and his commitment to the island of Isla Mujeres and its people. On his behalf we want to assist, with financial help, in educating promising, dedicated students to further their education enabling them the opportunity to improve their life style. We feel this opportunity will not only benefit the students but also their families and in turn, the whole community. Recently, the charity has also expanded to include students in Canada that are also financially challenged towards seeking further education and a more prosperous life.
