North Island Lodge Report: June 17, 2010

June 17, 2010

New Leader of the Spring Salmon Challenge! George Morine braved the elements to connect with the current leader in the Spring Salmon Challenge. George hooked the fish in tight at Cohoe Point and the 30kt southern wind pushed them two miles offshore during the 40 min battle. There was no hesitation on his part to let this fish go and Guide Tyson “The Albino Rhino” Reid quickly measured and released this beauty to swim another day. Unfortunately, it was not a great day for pictures but this photo gives you a good idea of the girth…Wow!

Here’s the official score card:

Now there’s something to shoot for, but you better aim high with 20 days to go.

Guests are loading up on Chinook in the 16-25 range. Double headers have been fairly common with herring and needlefish schooling all around the favorite spots. Weather has shifted northwest making Cohoe, Andrews and Boulder bay quite comfortable to fish. This morning we had our first tyee of the trip along with several in the high twenties. It was a quieter today, but the average size was up a little. Looking for some different scenery, guide Dane Peterson and the Schneyders decided to mix it up sneaking into Bruin on the slack tide hitting a couple of quick ones as well. With only a dance ticket or two left to fill guides today will be exploring, possibly some halibut fishing too.

Every once in a while we get a reminder how remote we really are. This afternoon had me scrabbling along the beach in gum boots with a fistful of hose clamps, some rope, duct tape, a flat head screw driver and a small knife. My old friend Jarod Ridge taught me you can fix just about anything on Langara with that selection of tools. A severed waterline had me in a panic as our water reserves drained into the North Pacific. I was thinking as everyone was watching the World Cup on satellite, someone chatting on the phone and sending emails, how could water be an issue? Several times during the day I pictured myself standing in the Home Depot plumbing and heating section with all the options in the world….Sad but true. After some shade tree mechanics we are back on the fill.

It is 8am Thurs morning and just checked in with DJ. The word is, “We’re getting them, it’s calm seas and pleasant to be out here”.

Stay tuned for what the weekend will bring…For me, hopefully a few items from someone in an orange apron!
